2008 BMW R1200GS

It's your planet. Ride it.

True two-wheeled adventurers know that when it comes to epic riding that crosses continents, there's only one choice: the unstoppable, all-conquering R 1200 GS Adventure. And for 2008, the world's most rugged adventure tourer features enhancements that make it even more adept at reaching the unreachable. A 5% increase in horsepower kicks its engine output to 105 HP. Combined with a taller windshield, adjustable seat, extra wide foot pegs, optional ABS and an 8.7 gallon fuel tank, even the longest days in the saddle are a breeze. Add Enduro ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) and you can customize both front and rear suspension settings to fit off-road or on-road riding conditions with the flick of a switch. No wonder it was Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's choice for their trans-Africa odyssey in the upcoming “The Long Way Down” and their epic journey from London to New York in "The Long Way Round."

Engine Summary

The two cylinder flat twin Boxer engine is BMW's famous, time-tested, signature design. First designed in 1923, its two horizontally mounted cylinders are like a boxer's gloves punching each other as he enters the ring. The result is a supremely reliable, flexible engine with a low center of gravity and like all twins, excellent torque characteristics. The exposed cylinders offer excellent air cooling and if it's durability, performance, and bulletproof all-around handling you want, this is your powerplant.

- The aluminum frame design is matched to rider ergonomics to maximize handling and control operation.

- Front and rear wheels feature HRC works-type lightweight aluminum spoke nipples.

- Front wheel features large-diameter front axle and wide wheel-bearing span for excellent rigidity.

- Rear axle diameter of 25mm and large-diameter bearings provide significant rigidity to withstand torturous track conditions.

- Lightweight 47mm inverted Showa twin-chamber cartridge fork with aluminum dampers feature settings unique to the CRF®. The fork offers 12.4 inches of travel, 16-position rebound and 16-position compression damping adjustability. Front fork stanchions' inner surfaces use same honing process as on works bikes for reduced friction.

- Pro-Link® single-shock rear suspension system features a fully adjustable Showa rear damper and 12.5 inches of wheel travel, separate low-speed (13 positions) and high-speed (3.5 turns) compression damping adjusters and 17-position rebound damping adjustability.

- Rear shock's damper piston diameter is 50mm for consistent performance under demanding riding conditions.

- Compact dual-piston front brake caliper has been designed for a weight savings of more than 1 ounce. Anodized aluminum brake pistons and lightweight front brake disc minimize unsprung weight for improved turning and handling.

- HRC works-type rear brake system integrates the rear master cylinder and fluid reservoir, eliminating the rear master cylinder reservoir and hose.

- Large 240mm front and rear brake discs.
