2009 Buell Ulysses XB12XP

The new Buell Ulysses® Police XB12XP offers government agencies and private security firms a quick and very nimble "special duty" patrol vehicle that is capable of travel over a variety of terrain, from open highways to city streets to unpaved back-country roads.

Based on the versatile Buell Ulysses adventure sportbike, the Ulysses Police features long-travel suspension, generous ground clearance and aggressive tires that allow it to tackle roads too rough or narrow for confident travel in an automobile or on a traditional police motorcycle. On smooth pavement, the Ulysses Police is an agile sport motorcycle. The Ulysses Police can also accommodate a passenger. Available for order through Buell dealers as of Tuesday, May 27 2008, production of the 2009 Ulysses Police is scheduled to begin in August 2008.

Special features of the Ulysses Police include hard-shell top and side cases, each removable and lockable. The side cases are narrower than the standard Ulysses accessory side cases, allowing for more clearance in tight situations. On the Ulysses Police model, the Buell Triple Tail system functions as a luggage rack with tie-down hooks over the rear seat position, or as a cushioned passenger backrest with grab rails. A tall windshield, heated hand grips, and handlebar deflectors are also standard equipment. An available emergency response kit provides a siren and an LED lighting package in three different color configurations (Red/Blue, Red/Red, or Blue/Blue).

The Ulysses Police is powered by an air/oil/fan-cooled, fuel-injected Buell Thunderstorm 1203cc V-Twin engine that delivers 103 peak horsepower. This engine's broad powerband and abundant torque gives the Ulysses the ability to proceed at lower speeds over uneven or unpaved roads with less gear shifting, and to deliver instant bursts of acceleration. The Ulysses Police has an EPA fuel mileage rating of 51 mpg urban/64 mpg highway*. A Goodyear Hibrex final drive belt with Flexten Plus technology is durable and never needs adjustment or lubrication.

Premium Showa front and rear suspension is fully adjustable. Rear spring preload can be adjusted for passenger and gear weight simply by turning a dial located below the left side of the seat. Suspension travel is 6.5 inches in front and 6.4 inches at the rear. Ground clearance is 6.75 inches.

The Ulysses Police features a 4.4-gallon fuel reservoir integrated into the aluminum frame. The lower center of mass achieved by carrying fuel in the frame, rather than in a tank located high on top of the frame, enhances rider confidence on and off pavement. The muffler is located below the engine to further lower the center of gravity and centralize mass for improved handling in all situations. Low unsprung weight helps keep the tires in contact with uneven road surfaces for improved control. The 17-inch, six-spoke, reinforced cast-aluminum wheels feature a durable rim design, and Pirelli Scorpion Sync tires deliver good traction on paved and unpaved roads. A dual front fender system provides debris protection for the rider and the bike.

The Ulysses Police will be offered in two color choices: Birch White and Midnight Black.

*Based on tests conducted under lab conditions per U.S. EPA test procedures. Mileage will vary depending on personal riding habits, weather conditions, trip length and vehicle condition.

Media Press Release:

VERSATILE BUELL ULYSSES IS READY FOR ANY ROAD
Adventure Sportbike has Heated Grips and New Front End for 2008

EAST TROY, Wis. (July 8, 2007) – Significant changes to the front suspension and steering, plus powertrain enhancements, improve the performance of the 2009 Buell Ulysses XB12XP, an adventure sportbike designed to carry its rider beyond the end of the pavement. The Ulysses features long-travel suspension, higher ground clearance and more aggressive tires that allow it to explore the roughest roads with confidence. But when the pavement is smooth and twisty, Ulysses performs like a flickable, agile sport motorcycle, propelled by a 1203 Thunderstorm V-Twin that is a bottomless pit of pure torque. Innovative features and accessories make Ulysses a comfortable, capable long-distance traveler or commuter. The versatile Buell Ulysses can take its rider where ever the road is headed.

New on Ulysses XB12X for 2008

New 47mm front forks replace the previous 43 mm forks. Secured with a new triple clamp design, this new front end improves the torsional rigidity of the entire chassis. Fork flex is reduced during hard braking for improved stability and feedback.

Steering sweep lock-to-lock is increased to 74 degrees from 54 degrees to reduce the turning radius in off-road low-speed maneuvers. New off-set triple clamps maintain the 23.5 degree rake and 4.8 inch trail.

Heated hand grips are now standard equipment on the 2008 Ulysses. The grips are rated at 18 watts per side on the High setting and 11 watts per side on the Low setting.

New air guides positioned on the tail section of the Ulysses deflect engine heat away from the rider's legs.

Modifications to the 1203 Thunderstorm V-Twin engine enhance performance, reduce maintenance, and allow a new redline of 7100 rpm (see separate Thunderstorm release for details).

The instrument panel styling is refreshed and the tachometer reflects the new 7100-rpm redline.

A commemorative Buell 25th Anniversary graphic with Erik Buell's signature is placed on the handlebar clamp.

New color: The 2008 Ulysses XB12X is offered in a new color, Thrust Blue, in addition to Barricade Orange and Midnight Black, each with Magnesium Tone wheels.

Ulysses XB12X: Imagine the Possibilities
The Buell Ulysses is a high-performance Adventure Sport motorcycle that is capable of confident travel over dirt, gravel and other unpaved road surfaces. Premium Showa front and rear suspension is fully adjustable. Rear spring preload can be adjusted for passenger and luggage weight simply by turning a dial located below the left side of the seat. Suspension travel is 6.5 inches in front and 6.4 inches at the rear. Ground clearance is 6.75 inches. The lower center of mass achieved by carrying fuel in the frame and oil in the swing arm enhance rider confidence off pavement, while limited unsprung weight helps keep the tires in contact with uneven road surfaces for improved control. The 17-inch, six-spoke, reinforced cast-aluminum wheels feature a durable rim design. A dual front fender system provides debris protection for the rider and the bike.

For enhanced comfort, the high, wide handlebar with a cross brace is equipped with deflectors and a two-piece windscreen designed to limit buffeting. The innovative Triple Tail system folds through three positions to function as a luggage rack with tie-down hooks over the rear seat position, as a cushioned passenger backrest with grab rails, or as a luggage rack extended over the rear fender. The Ulysses has two 10 amp/12-volt accessory power outlets (one on the dash, another under the seat) and a large under-seat storage compartment.

The broad powerband and abundant torque of the 103-hp Buell Firestorm 1203 V-Twin engine gives the Ulysses the ability to charge through twisty pavement sections or proceed at lower speeds over uneven, unpaved roads with less gear shifting.

Tiff of the Twins : KTM RC8 vs Ducati 1098 vs Buell 1125R

Buell 1125R vs KTM RC8 vs Ducati 1098!

Moto Revue recently pitted three twin-cylinder sportsbikes – KTM RC8 1190, Ducati 1098 and Buell 1125R – against each other, and while you’ll have to buy the mag for the full story, here are a few quick impressions.

The Ducati 1098, with its hard saddle, stiff suspension and very racer-centric ergonomics, is the least comfortable of the three bikes here. The RC8, with its adjustable ergos, and the 1125R, with its softer suspension, are more suited for longer journeys.

The KTM runs it close, but we think the 1098 still looks the best...

The RC8 steers very precisely, while the 1098, more physical to ride, feels more rigid and stable. Compared to the other two, the Buell feels less confidence-inspiring in the curves. The 1125R also displays inconsistent fit and finish, and build quality is poor for some parts.

Of course, the Buell is also the cheapest of the three bikes here, retailing at 12,695 euros, while the KTM is available for 16,250 euros and the Ducati for 17,350 euros.

Buell 1125R Redefines the Sportbike Riding Experience

New Buell 1125R Redefines the Sportbike Riding Experience

The Buell Motorcycle Company is set to break the convention of the superbike category with the Buell 1125R; an all-new, liter-class motorcycle that delivers an artful balance of street and track performance.

Rooted in the core design principles and character that have defined Buell motorcycles for 25 years, the 1125R offers power, handling and agility that will take its owner to a new level of riding experience. The Buell 1125R joins the XB and Blast as a third and distinct Buell motorcycle platform. The Buell 1125R is expected to arrive in Buell dealerships in late 2007.

"We designed the 1125R from the rider down," said Erik Buell, chairman and chief technical officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. "The 1125R takes Buell to a new level of performance, while continuing to embrace the fundamental Buell principals of motorcycle design and offering a great motorcycle riding experience."

The Buell 1125R riding experience derives not just from its power, but from a carefully considered combination of engine performance, precise-and-agile handling, advanced aerodynamics, and superior rider environment and control, all packaged with distinctive styling that leaves many of the motorcycle's mechanical components exposed.

New V-Twin Muscle

The Buell 1125R Helicon engine is a new 1125cc DOHC V-Twin, the first liquid-cooled engine to power a street-legal Buell motorcycle. This compact, 72-degree engine is the result of a collaboration between Buell and BRP-Rotax, a leader in the development and manufacture of advanced engines for recreational products. The Helicon engine was designed to Buell specifications and is exclusive to Buell. It will be manufactured in Austria by BRP-Rotax. The most-powerful street-legal engine ever offered by Buell, the Helicon engine is rated at 146 crankshaft horsepower, and is designed to deliver optimized usable power, with a broad powerband across its 10500 rpm range. Its V-Twin design retains the styling and character that has always defined the Buell riding experience.

The engine is cradled in a new Buell Intuitive Response Chassis (IRC) with massive, rigid aluminum spars that double as the fuel reservoir. The new 1125R sticks to the three tenants of the Buell Trilogy of Technology -- chassis rigidity, low unsprung weight and mass centralization -- to deliver race-inspired agility and handling. The all-new front fairing and radiator cowling was developed using the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to provide superior aerodynamics, rider comfort, and efficient air flow to longitudinal radiators and a ram-air intake system.

The front wheel is supported by 47 mm inverted forks. A new Buell ZTL2 front brake features an eight-piston caliper based on the brake developed for the Buell XBRR racing motorcycle. A smooth-shifting six-speed transmission is mated to a new HVA (Hydraulic Vacuum Assist) Slipper Action clutch that uses engine vacuum to boost clutch-lever action and to provide a "slipper" effect when the engine is down-shifted at speed. A new underslung muffler has dual brushed stainless steel outlets.

The Buell 1125R offers an athletic riding position. Quiet Zone aerodynamics are achieved by managing air flow around the rider for enhanced performance and comfort. The toe levers on both the brake and shift foot controls are adjustable to match rider foot size. The instrument cluster features a large analog tachometer and a digital speedometer, plus an Onboard Diagnostic Information System (O.D.I.S.) screen and other interactive features. The fairing shape is inspired by the Buell XBRR and features six-bulb headlamps. LED turn signals are integrated into the mirror housings.

The Buell 1125R is available with Midnight Black bodywork, Diamond Blue wheels, Diamond Blue frame and swingarm, and Fusion Bronze engine trim

Buell to offer Ulysses Police bike

Generally, when you see the boys in blue riding on two wheels, it's either on an air-cooled V-Twin Harley-Davidson or on a BMW road bike. Neither of these vehicles is appropriate when the road goes away, which could cause a few potential problems when giving chase. Buell, makers of the Ulysses, a bike which falls smack-dab into the center of the burgeoning Adventure Touring category, has decided to rectify the potential problem by offering a version of its on-or-off-road machine to the police. Differences between the Ulysses Police and the standard version amount to different standard side cases, a standard tall windshield, heated hand grips (which are available for the standard model as well), handlebar deflectors and an emergency response kit which includes the obligatory flashing lights and siren.

We wouldn't recommend trying a getaway under any circumstances, but the chances of shaking the Ulysses Police with its 103 horsepower V-Twin and off-road credentials seems pretty slim. As a bonus to the officers on board, the EPA rates the machine at 51 mpg urban/64 mpg highway. Seems like a pretty decent package, we'd say.

2006 Blast® Overview

The Buell Blast is a motorcycle any rider will enjoy. This lightweight single inspires confidence in beginners, yet offers enough power and refined agility to satisfy the performance expectations of the most experienced motorcyclist. Easy to own and maintain - and easy on fuel at 68 miles per gallon - the Buell Blast is a fun and economical way to get around town or down the highway.

Built for the Real World
The Blast is powered by a reliable, 492cc air-cooled, single-cylinder engine that makes 34 horsepower and offers a broad powerband for easy starts and brisk acceleration, and ample power for highway riding. The muffler is located below the engine to promote a low center of gravity and keep the exhaust away from the legs of the rider and passenger.

With a dry weight of just 360 pounds, the Blast is easy for most riders to handle, and when fitted with an optional low-profile seat, the seat height is just 25.5 inches, so just about any rider can reach the ground to balance at a stop. The standard Blast seat height is 27.5 inches. A Showa gas-charged rear shock and 37mm Showa forks feature progressive-rate springs that provide a controlled and comfortable ride. An automatic choke, low-effort brakes and a low-effort, reduced-reach clutch lever are all designed to make the Blast easier to operate.

Easy Economy
The Blast is also designed to be easy to maintain, with self-adjusting hydraulic valve lifters and a Kevlar-reinforced drive belt that never needs lubrication or adjustment. Fuel economy is 68 mpg in city riding, and a 2.8-gallon fuel tank delivers a cruising range of nearly 200 miles. The Blast is built to be durable, with tough Surlyn composite body panels. The color is molded into the Surlyn, so light scratches can simply be buffed out. The 2006 Blast is offered in Battle Blue or Midnight Black.

BUELL INTRODUCES XBRR PRODUCTION RACING MOTORCYCLE
Race-Use-Only Bike Brings Buell Full Circle

EAST TROY, Wis. (January 23, 2006) - Erik Buell and company come full circle with the introduction of the 2007 Buell XBRR, a limited-edition production racing motorcycle designed exclusively for closed course competition. A spiritual successor to Buell's first motorcycle, the 1983 RW750, the XBRR is poised to change the face of privateer racing with a professional-level, race-ready, production-based platform featuring top-shelf racing technology and typical Buell innovation.

"The XBRR combines the current culmination of Buell's leading edge chassis technology and Harley-Davidson's air-cooled V-Twin powertrain development in a platform designed by and developed for dedicated racers," said Erik Buell, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer, Buell Motorcycle Company.

For Erik Buell, the XBRR marks a return to his racing roots. As a successful privateer road racer early in his career, Buell eventually built his own race bikes for the AMA's then-premier Formula 1 class. The RW750 was a hand-built race bike, and it became the first official Buell motorcycle. Two were produced before the AMA discontinued the class after 1985. Buell then translated his race-bred design principles into a line of successful street bikes leading up to the current XB platform.

The Buell XBRR features a modified XB Thunderstorm 1339cc (103.6mm bore x 79.4mm stroke) air/oil-cooled V-Twin motor rated at 150-hp (measured at the crankshaft). The engine is fed by a dual-downdraft 62mm throttle-body electronic fuel injection system and a ram-air intake system integrated with a new wind-tunnel developed carbon fiber fairing.

The XBRR is the first production Buell since the 1988-89 RR1200 to feature a full fairing. Its lightweight carbon design integrates ducts for cooling of the engine and oil cooler. The fairing was extensively wind tunnel tested to improve aerodynamics and reduce drag.

The XBRR chassis is the revolutionary XB design with fuel-in-the-frame and oil-in-the-swingarm, modified with a billet axle adjustment system and chain-drive to allow gearing changes for different race tracks. Suspension travel is managed by fully adjustable Ohlins units, with 43mm front forks and a remote-reservoir rear shock.

A new ZTL2 (Zero Torsional Load) eight-piston front caliper grabs a standard XB front rotor providing outstanding braking performance, but with less weight than conventional designs. New XBRR six-spoke magnesium wheels weigh 33 percent less than standard XB wheels.

Instruments include tachometer, indicator lamps for shift, power on and low oil pressure. The XBRR features a unique Buell Racing paint scheme.

Buell XBRR features:

• 1339cc (81.7 cid) Thunderstorm Powertrain:
• 4.080 inch (103.6 mm) bore and 3.125 inch (79.4mm) stroke

2006 Buell Lightning® Long XB12Ss Overview

An extended swingarm and increased fork rake give the new Lightning Long a 54-inch wheelbase, two inches longer than the Lightning XB12S. Fork rake is increased from 21 to 22 degrees and trail goes from 3.3 inches to 4.7 inches. The result is a streetfighter with more relaxed handling and expanded ergonomics better suited to taller riders. The tail section is longer and the seat is taller and wider, and offers more room for a passenger. There's also a larger under-seat storage compartment. Larger frame side panels give the Lightning Long a fuel-in-frame capacity of 4.4-gallons. Buell InterActive Exhaust, a valve in the dual-chamber muffler controlled by the ECM that adjusts exhaust flow, gives the Thunderstorm 1203 V-Twin engine smooth torque delivery and optimized power. Like all Buell motorcycles, the handling remains quick and responsive. It is offered in Sunset Orange with Sunset Orange wheels, Midnight Black with Translucent Amber wheels, and Thrust Blue with Translucent Amber wheels, all with a Graphite Gray frame.
