Just when you thought the growing "naked bike"

segment - sportbikes shorn of their plastic wrappers, unveiled for all to see -
was all about showing off and nothing about substance and style, here comes the
2006 BMW K 1200 R. Unlike the weightlifter who can barely scratch his own back,
the K 1200 R is powerfully built yet agile, massively quick yet perfectly docile
for those times you want to take it easy. It's the ideal combination of menace
and class.

BMW has taken
advantage of the incredible technology housed in the new K 1200 S - a
straight-line speed machine that also accelerates, turns and stops like a
truly modern superbike - to create the K 1200 R. In fact, except for revised
bodywork and ergonomics, the two bikes are very much alike.

And yet the two motorcycles couldn't be further in
temperament. The K 1200 S is sophisticated, urbane, while the K 1200 R is
built for the rider who lives for sport riding and uncompromised
appearances. The K 1200 R eschews full bodywork for a tidy, aerodynamically
designed instrument-panel fairing that incorporates powerful asymmetrical
headlights and the engine oil cooler. This is a face that
performance-oriented riders won't soon forget. Nor will race fans, as the K
1200 R will form the basis for the BMW Power Cup, with races to be held all
over the world on special race-prepared machines. Taking up where the
popular Boxer Cup left off, it's likely that the best, hardest-fought racing
in 2005 will come from the ranks of the Power Cup.

 POTENT ACCELERATION FROM A STATE-OF-THE-ART
POWERPLANT

Behold the most powerful production motorcycle engine
BMW has ever built, the beneficiary of decades competing at the highest
levels of motorsport. But it's not just about sheer thrust. Indeed, the K
1200 R's revolutionary inline-four-cylinder engine sets new standards not
just for power - and, as important, excellent power delivery - but it was
designed from the start to be compact and light. Moreover, its unusual
configuration - the cylinder block is canted toward the front wheel by 55
degrees - not only reduces the entire motorcycle's center of gravity but
also permits innovating packaging solutions. The K 1200 R's layout is as far
from a me-too arrangement as you can get.

Thorough development of the 1157cc, liquid-cooled
engine made possible the 167-horsepower peak but is also responsible for the
engine's broad, flat torque curve; although it peaks at 94 pound-feet, 80
percent of the peak torque is available from 3500 rpm all the way to the
11,000-rpm redline. That's flexibility.

Maintaining high power and low emissions is one
responsibility of the K 1200 R's BMS-K (BMW Engine Management with
Anti-Knock Control) Digital Motor Electronics. This system features fully
sequential cylinder-specific fuel injection with integrated anti-knock
control and a three-way catalytic converter in the exhaust. Combining the
use of a sensitive oxygen sensor and fast feedback processing in the
engine-control computer with special anti-knock sensors, allowed BMW's
engineers to tune the K 1200 R's engine for maximum power yet retain the
ability to use less-than-premium fuel. (Maximum power will be obtained on
premium fuel, however.)

This sophisticated injection system allowed BMW's
engineers to boost the K 1200 R's compression ratio to a race-like 13.0:1,
which benefits not only power, but combustion efficiency as well. That gives
the rider more power and torque, and increases fuel economy at the same
time.

A NEW KIND OF BALANCING ACT

Inline-four-cylinder engines have characteristic
vibration but the K 1200 R powerplant uses a technology also explored in the
new R 1200 Boxer engines to make it inherently smooth. Twin balance shafts
are driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft at twice the crankshaft
speed and employ elastomer isolators to reduce transmission of noise and
vibration. These balance shafts reduce transmission of second-order
vibration from the engine to the chassis and, therefore, to the rider, who
will experience four-cylinder serenity as never before.

Dramatic advances in driveline technology abound in the K 1200 R. The
cassette-style six-speed transmission uses stacked shafts to reduce the
engine's overall length and to form the most efficient method of
transferring power to the shaft final drive.

CHASSIS OVERVIEW: HIGH-TECH ALLOY FRAME AND
UTTERLY UNCOMMON SUSPENSION

The K 1200 R shares the K 1200 S's chassis components,
including light-alloy main frame featuring dramatically tilted main spars -
to further reduce the machine's center of gravity - made up of a selection
of materials: pressure-cast aluminum, alloy extrusions and special die-cast
aluminum members. Because the counterbalanced engine does not vibrate like a
typical four-cylinder, it can be mounted solidly to the frame - no rubber
isolators are necessary. In this way, the frame is further strengthened by
the engine structure.

BMW has always pushed forward on suspension design,
and the K 1200 R continues the tradition. Joining a revised, lightened
version of the company's famed Paralever rear suspension - much lighter than
conventional shaft systems and without a typical shaft's squatting
tendencies - is the Duolever front suspension. Based on a concept developed
by British inventor Norman Hossack in the 1980s, Duolever effectively
isolates suspension movement from steering forces for smooth handling.
Moreover, Duolever has significantly less friction than conventional
telescopic forks, so its action is much more supple while also being given
spring and damping rates appropriate for a sportbike. Finally, the Duolever
has been designed to provide effective anti-dive control so that the K 1200
R remains on an even keel during hard braking.

And it's not just the suspension design that breaks
new ground, either. As with the K 1200 S, the K 1200 R features BMW's ESA -
Electronic Suspension Adjustment - as an option. Accessed through the
instrument panel display, ESA sets spring and damping rates electronically.
The rider can choose three combined spring settings - solo, solo with
luggage or rider with passenger and luggage - along with three damping
modes: comfort, normal or sport. The spring settings must be adjusted at a
standstill, but the damping adjustments can be made while underway.

IMPRESSIVE BRAKES AND ADAPTIVE ANTI-LOCK CONTROL,
TOO

BMW's acclaimed EVO brake system is standard on the K
1200 S. Integral ABS is available as an option. Disc diameters in front are
320mm with a single 265mm disc at the rear. The K 1200 S includes BMW's
Partial-Integral adaptive braking system. Both brakes -- front and rear --
are activated whenever the rider pulls the handlebar-mounted lever, but only
the rear brake is activated by the foot pedal. BMW has continued to develop
the EVO ABS system and for the K 1200 S, the technology has been refined
once again to take full advantage of the bike's peerless sporting
performance.

These powerful brakes work through new-design wheels
that are light yet strong. They carry traditional sportbike-sized tires - a
120/70ZR17 in front and a large-footprint 180/55ZR17 at the rear.

BMW Outlines a New Reality for its Two Brands: BMW and Husqvarna

In a speech given in Munich earlier today, new BMW Motorrad President Hendrik von Kuenheim described the ambitious goals of his company with two distinct brands, including BMW and Husqvarna. Although the occasion was the unveiling of a prototype of BMW's superbike racer (pictured throughout this article), which will enter competition next year, von Kuenheim described the goals of BMW Motorrad as a whole for the next few years.

Although the entire speech is presented below (and it is worth reading), here are the highlights.

BMW Motorrad intends to increase annual unit sales to 150,000 by the year 2012, representing 50% growth from the current level. BMW intends to achieve this to a great extent through the Husqvarna brand. BMW has aggressively pursued the development of the prestiguous Husqvarna brand motorcycles, and will use Husqvarna to reach for a 30% growth in sales this year alone.

Husqvarna motorsport activities, including enduro, motocross and supermoto racing, are already successful and will be expanded. BMW considers the "enduro" segment of off-road motorcycles to be one area where the motorcycle industry will continue to grow for several years. BMW claims customer interest in Husqvarna "has increased very significantly following the takeover by BMW."

Despite competitive disadvantages with the Japanese in currency exchange rates (where both the dollar and the Yen have lost about 80% of their value against the Euro in the last seven years alone), BMW has carefully defined strategies to remain competitive on price and value.

BMW will enter the World Superbike championship next year, apparently with more than one rider. BMW's goal is several top ten finishes next year, followed by podium placings the following year, and a battle for the championship thereafter.

The production version of the race bike is designated the "S 1000 RR", and 1000 street-legal production models will be completed by the end of next year to satisfy racing homologation requirements.

Here is the full text of the speech given by Hendrik von Kuenheim this morning:

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Dear Motorcycle Friends,

I also bid you a very warm welcome here today. This is indeed the first time I am addressing you in my new function as the President of BMW Motorrad. Some of you already know me however from my former activities - my last position was the President of BMW Spain.

I joined BMW about 20 years ago and over the years I have gained a great deal of experience in international car and motorcycle sales. Now I am happy to invest this experience in BMW Motorrad, helping to shape the future of BMW's motorcycle business.

At BMW as well as at Husqvarna Motorcycles, we are working all-out on a whole series of fascinating projects. We are in the middle of a broad-based model initiative.

It is essential that this model initiative is turned into a success story over the next few years. It is our objective to expand the motorcycle business significantly and to achieve profitable growth.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

In my presentation today I will be focusing on two highlights in particular: First, I would like to give you some background information on our ambitious growth targets. Second, I will offer you the first status report on our Supersport project.

Allow me to start with some essential aspects of our growth strategy.

This year we again plan to deliver more motorcycles to our customers than in the previous year, continuing the many years of success BMW Motorrad is now able to report.

Considering that motorcycle markets show a rather irregular and inconsistent development, this is and remains a very demanding target.

We are of course focusing in particular on our core models in the Tourer, Sports Tourer, and Enduro markets. Indeed, these models remain indispensable within BMW's future range of motorcycles.

This applies particularly to our Boxers: The Boxer engine is just as much part of BMW as the white-and-blue logo. For this reason alone, this unique engine concept has a long and great future with BMW Motorrad. A future which, just like the past, will again offer numerous innovations.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
We are continuing our powerful initiative not only with our core models. BMW Motorrad has ambitious growth targets: As part of the strategic reorientation of the BMW Group, we have announced that customer deliveries by BMW Motorrad are to increase by approximately 50 per cent by the year 2012 to 150,000 units.

To meet this objective, we are making BMW Motorrad even more sporting and dynamic. This means that we are specifically entering market segments where BMW Motorrad was not represented so far.

We have already taken the initiative in this respect with the HP2 models and the F Series. Now we are taking on the competition to an increasing extent with brand-new, innovative and sporting products, moving ahead strongly also in international motorcycle racing.

But why are we doing all this?

Because we see a great potential in the Enduro segment, for example, for further growth. In the Tourer and Sports Tourer segments, on the other hand, we are reaching the limits to growth, since in this case we have largely exhausted our market potentials in the meantime. Precisely this is why we plan to address additional new customers we have not been able to win over so far.

So this is why we are expanding our product portfolio to other market segments BMW Motorrad has not served in the past. Two examples are our entry into the Sports Enduro segment and our entry into the Supersport segment.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
To make our approach in this area even clearer and more specific, we are pursuing a two-brand strategy, which is precisely why we purchased Husqvarna Motorcycles last year. Together with Husqvarna Motorcycles, we are confident that we will reach our sales target of 150,000 machines a year.

Husqvarna Motorcycles is the second-oldest motorcycle manufacturer still building motorcycles today and is one of the most famous names worldwide in the motorcycle business. Over the years, Husqvarna have won more than 70 World Championships in offroad and Supermoto racing.

With Husqvarna's very sporting machines, we are able to expand our product range even faster to new groups of purchasers throughout the entire offroad and Supermoto segments than we could with BMW alone.

The highly competitive offroad segment is particularly large in the USA, Southern Europe and Australia. And holding a very good position in all of these markets, Husqvarna is already very strong, offering BMW Motorrad a perfect partner.

We are very happy indeed with our new brand in the motorcycle segment, which is giving the entire Company extra momentum. So we have given ourselves ambitious growth targets right from the start, as of 2008: This year we plan to boost sales by approximately 30 per cent over the previous year, and we are already proceeding all-out to this objective.

To reach this target we initiated and implemented a number of activities right from the start when taking over Husqvarna.

Production output is developing according to plan. And after re-organising our parts business, we have solved our former problems in the supply of spares.

At the same time we have launched special programmes and activities for the further improvement of product quality.

We are also very happy with Husqvarna in motorsport, with the season so far developing very positively. We are active in both Enduro and Motocross events and in Supermoto racing. Indeed, the first results of the season in these various disciplines already exceed our expectations.

And we are particularly happy that customer interest in Husqvarna has increased very significantly following the takeover by BMW, particularly in the amateur motorsport segment.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
We are moving ahead quickly and strongly not only with Husqvarna. Rather, our own model initiative at BMW Motorrad is also continuing at a fast pace and on a high level.

In 2008, we offer our customers the substantially upgraded R 1200 GS and GS Adventure. On 8 March we started sales of the exclusive BMW HP2 Sport, and in the second half of the year the BMW G 450 X Sports Enduro will round off BMW's model range in a brand-new segment.

On 8 March the new BMW F 800 GS and BMW F 650 GS two-cylinders celebrated the start of sales.

Initial response from the markets makes us very optimistic. In fact, global demand even exceeds our production capacities, with demand particularly from the Southern European markets in Spain, Italy and Greece exceeding our greatest hopes. Particularly the F 800 GS is the choice of many customers who have so far ridden another make.

So much on the new models in 2008 you already know. But let me add that we will be presenting further surprises at the major motorcycle shows in Cologne and Milan, the Intermot and EICMA, which we cannot talk about yet today.

So you see that we are well-prepared for the future.

Despite all this good news, the fact remains that BMW Motorrad - like all European motorcycle manufacturers - currently faces special challenges. We see almost daily how conditions are becoming tougher, with the prices of raw materials and energy going up all the time and currency risks becoming greater.

Let me explain briefly just how much the currency issue affects our competitive situation:

In the last seven years alone, the dollar and the Japanese yen have lost about 80 per cent of their value versus the euro.

That means that our main competitors are benefiting from even the slightest weakness of the dollar and the yen, from every drop in value even behind the decimal point. They are able to offer their products at lower prices in the world market and make significant profits all the same.

Obviously, we must find answers to these challenges, since we cannot pass on these cost disadvantages directly to our customers in a one-to-one process.

To remain competitive we are therefore continuing to enhance our efficiency in Development, Production and Sales, we are intensifying our international Purchasing activities, and we are creating a very attractive, innovative product portfolio.

This, Ladies and Gentlemen, takes me on to the highlight I am sure you are all looking forward to.

I stated before that we are actively looking for new options, for profitable growth and for the planned increase in volume. Precisely that is why we have decided, among other things, to take on the competition in the Supersports segment on both the road and the race track.

We naturally realise that we are taking on a great challenge. Particularly the Japanese are some 20 years ahead of us in this class and have lots of experience. But even so, the spirit of this competition alone encourages us in our efforts. From the start we wish to be on par with our well-established competitors also in the Supersports segment.

Our development team is highly motivated to achieve our goals. And I can tell you today that the status we have achieved so far is very promising.

We are confident that we will be able to start the Superbike World Championship next year with a convincing all-round package, and that our series motorcycle will be just as convincing. In both terms of both its technology and price, our Supersports will be absolutely competitive.

Dear Motorcycle friends, what motivates us to move into this segment in particular?

First:

The very fascination of this motorcycle with its racing DNA expands and upgrades the brand image of BMW Motorrad by offering an additional, sporting and emotional element winning over new customers for the brand.

The Superbike World Championship is becoming increasingly popular among motorcycle riders, since here, unlike the MotoGP, they are able to watch and admire their motorcycles in a direct comparison with competitors.

And they can enjoy this thrill all around the world! This year the Superbike World Championship is being held on four continents and in 13 countries.

Second:

For the first time we are demonstrating the innovative power of BMW Motorrad also in the segment of the most dynamic, top-performance onroad motorcycles, since our Supersports motorcycle is an all-BMW development from the ground up and will be built at our plant in Berlin.

Third:

We are expanding our product portfolio also with a view to worldwide growth.

Today sales in the 1,000-cc class amount to some 100,000 units worldwide. The vast majority of these motorcycles goes to the USA and Europe. And the four large Japanese manufacturers account for about 85 per cent of the market.

BMW Motorrad is looking at a long-term involvement in this segment. Clearly, that means we must speak the language of the segment and follow the usual market standards. And indeed - we are confident that we will set new benchmarks in this scene, winning over an appropriate market share.

This, Ladies and Gentlemen, takes me on to the motorcycle as such.

It is our objective to offer the customer a high-performance motorcycle with absolutely outstanding qualities and features on both the road and race track in terms of rideability, performance, and ergonomics.

Since we are still in the middle of the development process, it would be too soon to mention any specific technical data. But you naturally know the usual level of performance our competitors have to offer. So with this in mind, I leave it to you today to speculate on what the specifications might be.

Our Supersports is based on a highly proven fundamental concept. Before choosing this concept, we naturally analysed the market and the appropriate technologies with utmost care and precision. And we will use the technical parameters required to develop our own solutions.

In the early project phase we checked out various engine concepts. And as you know, we then decided in favour of a four-cylinder, with the straight-four offering the best qualities to meet the power, performance, weight, and package requirements to be fulfilled. In typical BMW style, the engine will of course offer a number of special features, especially on the cylinder head.

For package reasons we have decided against the BMW Duo-Lever on the suspension. Taking up more space, this kind of front-wheel geometry would have presented disadvantages with the very compact structure of BMW's new Superbike.

But you can be sure that the innovations we are introducing are absolutely convincing. One example is the special traction control you will find on the new machine. Again, however, we cannot give you any further information today.

As you may expect of BMW Motorrad, the design of our BMW Supersports will be absolutely unique and very different. While it will of course reflect the usual design language in the segment, it will at the same time offer a strong and powerful message from the BMW brand.

Now let me briefly give you the status of our entry into the Superbike World Championship:

Today I can confirm that our preparations are proceeding according to plan in every respect: In compliance with the rules of the Series, the new motorcycle will be available to customers in 2009 and we will build 1,000 production models by the end of next year.

We are implementing our racing activities in close cooperation with our partner Alpha-Racing, a specialist very experienced in motorsport. Located near Munich, Alpha-Racing have already started work in a special production hall specifically for this purpose.

The process of building up the team is proceeding at full swing and we have already filled the key positions.

The team is a combination of specialists from BMW and members of the Alpha-Technik racing crew, as well as further specialists from professional Superbike racing.

Choosing the development and test riders for our racing machine, we are currently operating in a revolving system to gain as much experience as possible. The selection of test riders ranges from experienced riders still active today all the way to young "top guns".

In the upcoming weeks and months we will systematically start production of the racing machine in its individual power and performance stages, testing the new model as we go along.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We naturally realise that the established teams have many years of experience. But we wish to take up this challenge in particular and have put together a highly motivated team precisely for this purpose, a team which will prove the performance of our new motorcycle in professional racing.

Naturally, we will have to go through a certain process of learning - which is precisely why we have set ourselves realistic targets for the time being: In our first year in the Superbike World Championship we seek to bring home several places in the Top 10 and to consistently close the gap to the top teams. In year 2 we plan to catch up with the top teams and to win our first places on the podium. And our medium-term objective, obviously, is to win the World Championship!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

So much on this project, the current status of the project and our preparations for entering the World Superbike Championship next year.

You have been speculating a lot on the designation of our new model. So let us put an end to this speculation today.

BMW Motorrad's first Supersports will be the "S 1000 RR".

In choosing the name and designation of BMW's new Supersports, we are consistently following our nomenclature at BMW Motorrad. In this name, the "S" stands for Supersports, marking a new class of motorcycles from BMW. The "1000" designates the size of the engine, and the "RR" naturally stands for the model itself.

Dear Motorcycle Friends,

Many motorcycle magazines have published photos of a racing prototype which we have tested on several racing tracks. Today we would like to show you this racing prototype, offering you an initial impression of the package and the technology.

But when you see the motorcycle in a minute, please note that neither the design nor the impression of quality are the same as on the production model following at a later point.

Thank you for your attention.

BMW Motorrad’s HP2 Megamoto

BMW Motorrad’s HP2 Megamoto

Motorrad’s exclusive high performance bike soon to be delivered to first customers. The long wait for BMW’s HP2 Megamoto is almost over – the eagerly anticipated, super-high quality machine will be arriving in Motorrad showrooms in July.

The HP2 Megamoto is the second product from the exclusive BMW Motorrad ‘High Performance’ line. The Megamoto is an original, premium motorcycle that continues BMW’s ‘HP’ philosophy of offering unique, high performance, quality motorcycles, which are hand-built with high-grade materials and quality components.

Designed as a street-legal twin-cylinder Supermoto, the Megamoto blends aggressive good-looks and the ultimate in street performance. The motorcycle is widely considered to be the most uncompromising and single-minded street bike BMW Motorrad has ever produced.

Throughout the Megamoto’s concept and design phases, a key goal for BMW engineers has been to deliver pure characterful performance. The powerplant is a tuned version of BMW’s iconic Boxer-twin engine, pumping out an impressive 113hp with a class leading 115Nm of torque. With the use of modern, lightweight materials, such as carbon fibre, the Megamoto weighs in at just 179kg, thus giving the bike a mightily impressive, arm-wrenching power to weight ratio.

No expense has been spared with chassis components to ensure captivating handling and uncompromising road holding. A fully adjustable, top of the range Öhlins shock absorber ensures consistently stable rear-end feedback, whilst accurate steering is achieved with sturdy, upside-down 45mm Marzocchi front forks. Along with the hand-built trellis frame chassis, the Megamoto achieves both sensitive and responsive steering, whilst maintaining maximum high speed stability.

Tony Jakeman, BMW Motorrad’s Marketing Manager said, “The Megamoto has been designed and built for those riders who strive to be different and want a top-end, high-quality motorcycle that has class leading performance, that is fast, fun and innovative. The bike typifies BMW Motorrad’s brand shift to producing an ever more diverse range of premium performance motorcycles that appeal to connoisseur riders.

BMW R 1200 GS – The Most Successful BMW Of All Time

BMW R 1200 GS – The Most Successful BMW Of All Time

BMW Motorrad celebrated an impressive record on 27 July as the 100,000th R 1200 GS rolled off the production line in Berlin, Germany. Since the introduction of the all-new, lighter and more powerful R 1200 GS in 2004, a staggering 84,373 units have been built, plus an additional 15,627 of its model variant, the R 1200 GS Adventure.

No other BMW motorcycle has been built in such volume and within such a short space of time, thus making the R 1200 GS the most successful BMW motorcycle of all time.

The R 1200 GS is as popular today as it was back then. In 2006, 31,138 units were sold worldwide, making it BMW’s best selling model.

The popularity, supremacy and high volume of sales all underline the unique and universal appeal of the GS ‘Gelande Strasse’ (on/off-road) concept. Until fairly recently, BMW’s GS range of motorcycles was considered a rather niche proposition, used mainly by globetrotters and desert racers. However, the legendary genre has now firmly entered the mainstream, buoyed by a realisation that road-specific suspension, ergonomic efficiency and all-day comfort make more sense in the real world of high insurance premiums, poorly maintained roads and traffic congestion.

Tony Jakeman, Marketing Manager for BMW Motorrad UK, commented, “Here in the UK the GS and GS Adventure have been the best selling bikes, in the Adventure category, for several years. In 2006, the number of GS and GS Adventure registrations, at 2277, made it the best selling motorcycle in the country, so we’re delighted to be celebrating the production of the 100,000th R 1200 GS.

"Sales are looking strong again in 2007, with more and more riders discovering the joys of BMW GS ownership. The R 1200 GS and Adventure version work equally well as everyday commuters, weekend sports bikes and long-distance tourers.”

BMW Canjamoto 1200 Scorpion

BMW Canjamoto 1200 Scorpion

The Scorpion is a BMW R1200S chassis covered in striking body work by CANJAMOTO - Canadian Jamaican Motorsports, a Canadian company based in Toronto did a little bodywork and came up with what they call the Scorpion.

It has no gauges, all information is to be provided via a heads up display, though different windscreens will be available depending on intended use.

Street and Racing models will be available in 2008, the turbo version is said to produce 160 horsepower at the rear wheel. Weight is 410 pounds.

The goal of CANJAMOTO designer Richard Minott is to create motorcycles that have the presence and feel of exotic cars. Hence the smooth surface over the top of the bike which is intended to reflect the sensation of an exotic cars hood.

New BMW HP2 Sport - Most Powerful And Lightest Boxer

New BMW HP2 Sport - Most Powerful And Lightest Boxer

Based on the R 1200 S Sports Boxer, that competed successfully in Endurance race events this season, the new HP2 Sport bristles with high-end, top-quality racing parts. The HP2 Sport is the third model in the BMW HP ‘High Performance’ range. The HP series has been designed by engineers at the BMW factory to produce bikes that represent the ultimate in riding performance; with the skilful harmony of exceptionally high quality components resulting in a high-end range of motorcycles.

For the new model, BMW Motorrad has developed the most powerful Boxer engine ever. This has been achieved through the complete redesign of the cylinder heads to create the first Boxer engine with double overhead camshaft. This allows the engine to reach higher revs therefore generating more power. Achieving over 128hp at 8750rpm and 115Nm of torque at 6000rpm, the engine really packs a punch. With a dry weight of just 178kg, the bike’s power to weight ratio promises impressive performance.

The HP2 Sport has been designed with racing components originally developed from lessons learnt in Endurance racing. For instance, the frame has been strengthened from the standard one fitted to the existing R 1200 S model. Also the HP2 Sport is the first production motorcycle to be available for road use with a quickshifter. This enables fast gear changes without easing off the throttle or operating the clutch, making for a smoother, faster ride. As well as this the bike has a close-ratio six-speed gearbox, for maximum acceleration. Continuing its race credentials the HP2 Sport comes complete with a light-weight carbon fibre fairing, including a self-supporting seat unit.

Further innovative sport design elements include a MotoGP-style dashboard, forged aluminium wheels, Brembo brakes with radially mounted calipers and specially developed Öhlins front and rear suspension units, making the bike truly track ready.

The endurance racing features of this bike are clear. A first for a Boxer engine, the new stainless steel two-in-one exhaust system is placed under the oil sump, guaranteeing optimum lean angles. The HP2 Sport is also comes complete with adjustable footrests, brake and gear levers to allow for the optimum riding position for both racing and the road.

Although racing potential is clearly at the forefront of the design of the HP2 Sport, this does not mean forgoing safety design features such as ABS. Available on request, this sophisticated anti-lock system has been designed specifically for the model, and has been configured to be switched off for track use.

Tony Jakeman, BMW Motorrad’s Marketing Manager said, “The HP2 Sport is a bike designed for riders with an ultimate passion for sports riding. With numerous cutting-edge sports design features and a high performance engine this model is really leading the way for BMW sport production motorcycles. The bike is indicative of the brand shift that we have taken over recent years, whilst maintaining the uncompromising standards expected of BMW Motorrad.”

The on-the-road price of the HP2 Sport is expected to be around £14,500 (to be confirmed) when the bike becomes available at BMW Motorrad dealerships in Spring 2008.

BMW Motorrad's Exciting New Motorcycles For 2008

BMW Motorrad's Exciting New Motorcycles For 2008

Having recently added the new HP2 Sport to its expanding model line-up, BMW Motorrad further demonstrated its commitment to developing its ‘new design philosophy’ at the EIMCA Show in Milan, unveiling a further three brand new motorcycles and two up-rated models for 2008:

F 650 GS – an all-new version of the popular GS all-rounder
F 800 GS – a completely new middleweight adventure tourer with excellent off-road performance
G 450 X Sports Enduro – a brand new model for the competition enduro and sports off-road market
R 1200 GS – an updated version of BMW Motorrad’s best selling GS model
R 1200 GS Adventure – an improved model of the ultimate long-distance enduro
BMW’s industry-leading dedication to off-road sport and adventure riding – a genre it created and popularised more than two-and-a-half decades ago – has been further strengthened following the launch of these five new models.

With two completely new enduro models, the F 800 GS and F 650 GS, BMW Motorrad is not just expanding its range of products but also presenting a worthy successor to the successful single-cylinder F 650 GS.

F 650 GS
The F 650 GS, despite its familiar designation, is a completely new machine. Along with its bigger brother, the F 800 GS, it is powered by BMW’s sophisticated and highly praised 798cc parallel-twin engine, albeit in a softer state of tune, which provides plenty of power combined with excellent fuel economy. The bike’s low seat height and light controls make the F 650 GS an easy to handle all-rounder, perfectly suited to newcomers to motorcycling and ideal for everyday use.

F 800 GS
The all-new F 800 GS expands BMW Motorrad’s class leading traditions into the middleweight adventure sports category. The overall package combines balance, power and weight with excellent ground clearance and long suspension travel. The result is a machine with excellent off-road riding performance combined with touring capability.

G 450 X
Entering the competitive 450cc enduro market will be the brand new, no compromise, BMW G 450 X Sports Enduro. This machine will feature an innovative 450cc single cylinder engine and unique chassis design. Having been successfully tested in European and world competition throughout 2007, its entry into the 450cc Enduro market in the middle of next year will see BMW Motorrad continue its philosophy of launching class-leading machinery in competitive new market segments.

R 1200 GS and Adventure
There are also further improvements and developments to the all-terrain big boxer machines – the unchallenged choice of the world’s most adventurous overlanders, including Ewan MacGregor and Charley Boorman. The new version of the best selling R 1200 GS, and its Adventure variant, benefit from a more powerful engine with improved drive and traction. New for 2008, both models will be offered with the option of a new Enduro version of ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment).

The unique system offers R 1200 GS and Adventure owners the opportunity to tune their suspension for on or off-road use at the touch of a button.

Tony Jakeman, BMW Motorrad Marketing Manager, said: “With the launch of five exciting new models BMW Motorrad continues to broaden its appeal to a wider motorcycle audience. Eagerly anticipated models such as the F 650 GS and F 800 GS will not only attract new riders to BMW, but will also please existing Motorrad fans with their performance, handling and good looks.

“The up-rated versions of the best-selling R 1200 GS and Adventure, with our unique Electronic Suspension Adjustment system, will reinforce our leadership in the Adventure motorcycle sector. We are also excited to be entering even more diverse market segments with models such as the G 450 X, reinforcing our philosophy to launch class leading machinery into new motorcycle market sectors.”

GG Quadster: Impending doom on four wheels

We took a look at the original GG Quad a little while back and poked fun at its piddly 106-mph top speed, which is primarily due to its mild-mannered 85-horsepower air-cooled boxer engine that displaces 1150cc. Consider that small problem resolved. The new GG Quadster utilizes Bavaria's latest liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder engine, which displaces just a bit more at 1200cc but offers a heck of a lot more grunt: 167 horses to be exact. Yep, that's just about double the ponies, and it has the desired effect on the quad; 0 to 60 drops from about five seconds to just three and a half. With its super-fat rubber, six-speed sequential gearbox and reverse gear, this latest version of the quad-of-death should offer plenty of pants peeing performance. As much as we'd love to have one of these machines, getting it registered for street use in the States would likely be an exercise in frustration. Too bad, because the fuel mileage is probably pretty good, which is exactly the purpose for this machine, right?

BMW introduces new R1200S-based HP2 Sport

click above image to view gallery of the BMW HP2 Sport

Longtime BMW riders would hardly recognize the motorcycles coming from the Bavarian bike maker these days. Starting with the redesign of the R-Series models and their bump in displacement to 1200cc's a few years ago, BMW has been making a statement that it's going to be moving the brand up in the performance ranks. The four cylinder K1200 series has given BMW an image-bike that further cements it into the high performance race, and now the R1200S HP2 Sport will take the BMW brand back to the race track in style.

Starting with the R1200S as its base, already BMW's sportiest model, the HP2 adds new 4-valve heads sporting dual overhead cams. Redlining at around 9,500 RPM, the power output of the engine has been increased to 128 horsepower, and the 85 ft-lb. of torque makes this engine very powerful for an air-cooled boxer-twin. Routing that muscle to the rear wheel is a six-speed gearbox featuring a quick-shifter that allows the bike to survive full-throttle up-shifts and performs quicker than what can be done using your hands and feet.

BMW MOTORRAD MEDIA TALK 2008 - PICTURES OF PROTOTYPE RACE BIKE BMW S 1000 RR
04/16/2008

Race bike prototype of the BMW S 1000 RR.

The BMW S1000RR is a super bike manufactured by BMW Motorrad to contend in the 2009 Superbike World Championship.[1] It was introduced in Munich on 16 April, 2008 for the 2009 model year[2] and is powered by a 1,000 cc (61 cu in) inline-4 engine.

The BMW will only produce 1000 production models in 2009 to satisfy World Superbike homologation requirements. It will feature traction control and is targeted to weigh 190 kg (419 lb) and produce 190 bhp (142 kW). The S1000RR is unlikely to be in dealers until early 2010.[1] While BMW has yet to set the price for the production bike, it is aiming to keep it competitive with Japanese super bikes.
