2007 Ducati GT 1000

READY FOR 2007, THE SPORT 1000 BIPOSTO, THE SPORT 1000 S AND A NEW TWO-TONE LIVERY FOR THE GT 1000

The SportClassic family, which has met with great success since its appearance in 2003, replicates the styling of the motorcycles built in Ducati's workshops in the 1970s, characterised by a minimalist, sporting look, with an exposed frame and bodyparts in soft, rounded shapes.

To emphasis the unique style of these bikes, Ducati has used top-level original components and finishes, featuring chrome and brightwork that provide the final touch, personalise the range and evoke the lines of the bikes from which they're inspired.

The whole SportClassic family mates retro style with modern technology and mounts the brilliant Desmo 1000 DS engine: delivering impressive torque, this air-cooled 90° "L" twin-cylinder is the ideal engine for these new sports models. The cylinders, with their traditional cooling fins and classic L-configuration, harken to the original design by Taglioni. The 1000 DS engine is equipped with the Desmo twin-valve system, fuel injection and an electronic engine control to guarantee power, reliability, thrilling performance and ease of use.

As of 2007, the Sport 1000 will be available in two new versions: as well as the traditional single-seater, the Sport 1000 will be produced in an updated two-seater version for the new season, with a comfortable seat for both rider and pillion, complete with removable seat-cover so as to leave that perfect Café Racer style undiminished.

Another two-seater version is the new Sport 1000 S, with a seductive new colour scheme of red frame and swingarm with black wheel rims and engine covers, and featuring a classic upper fairing with a round central headlamp, to give it a more aggressive look in keeping with 1970's tradition.

As well as its two traditional colours red and grey, the GT 1000 will be presented in an original new two-tone livery of metallic black and cream, which recalls the original designs of this Ducati grand tourer.

GT 1000

Born as a tribute to the essential beauty of the Ducati GT models of the 1970s, the GT 1000 is ideal for everyday use, thanks to its perfect balance between comfort, whether you ride alone or two-up, and the performance of the Ducati Desmo twin-cylinder engine. Every part and component is made with the highest quality materials and designed with performance in mind - and that's just as it should be for a bike based on the historic models from Ducati's heritage. Despite being unashamedly classic in inspiration, the GT is still a thoroughly modern Ducati when it comes to power, handling, safety and a thrilling ride.

The feeling you get astride the GT 1000 is one of comfort and complete control of the bike. The riding position is comfortable and upright. The double-seat is comfortably padded, has a classic design and boasts the Ducati logo in white on the back. The rider's footrests are set forward for maximum comfort and optimum ground clearance. And because the GT 1000 is a true two-seater, the position of the pillion footrests is designed for maximum comfort even on long trips.

The form of the GT 1000 represents a modern interpretation of the classic lines of the original GT of the 1970s. The slim, ergonomic fuel tank has two indents on the sides to accommodate the rider's legs comfortably, and is crowned with a chromed fuel cap. The front and rear mudguards, and side panels are reminiscent of the 1970s originals. Many parts, such as the top yoke and handlebar clamps are made of polished aluminium, which compliments with the chrome finish of the wheels, handlebars, rear-view mirrors, instrument panel and other components. The exhaust system is also chromed and is made up of manifolds with a double wall construction to keep the chromed surface untarnished over time.

The big new feature this year is the two-tone version of the GT 1000, in metallic black and cream, based on the classic two-tone livery of the Ducati GT 750 launched in 1971.

THE CAFÉ RACER STYLE OF THE ORIGINAL DUCATI SPORT 750
In the 1970s, sport riders were modifying their street bikes with some of what they saw being used on the racetrack, including clip-on handlebars, rear set footpegs, and ‘fast’ colours. This was done just as much for the look as for increased performance. The Café Racer style was born.

A CLASSIC FOR TODAY
The Sport 1000 monoposto elegantly captures the bold style of the early bikes with its clip-on handlebars and monoposto single seat. The Sport 1000 is built with quality throughout: it mounts high performance Marzocchi front forks with classic brushed aluminium surfaces and a massive 60mm swingarm with a fully adjustable single Sachs shock. The unique suspension layout of the Sport 1000 ensures that its look matches the classic appeal of the bike, while still delivering the superior road holding and performance you expect from Ducati.

Features and Benefits:

CLASSIC STYLE AND MODERN SPORT PERFORMANCE
Welcome to the Ducati SportClassic family: motorcycles that capture the essential beauty, timeless style and emotion of Engineer Fabio Taglioni’s original Ducati sport bikes of the 1970s. While retaining the best of the past, they have been developed using the latest technology and engineering, creating a range of thoroughly modern motorcycles that live up to today’s standards of road-going performance.

The Sport and GT models are all powered by the outstanding Desmo 1000 Dual Spark engine.

The torquey air-cooled 90º L-Twin is the perfect match to power bikes with a sporting soul. The cylinders, with their traditional cooling fins and classic ‘L’ configuration, are direct descendents of the original Taglioni design. Slim and exposed for all to see, the latest 2 valve Desmo system, fuel-injection and computer controlled engine management ensure that the 1000 Dual Spark engine is powerful, dependable and thrilling to ride.

TRELLIS FRAME AND WIRE-SPOKE WHEELS
The SportClassic design takes advantage of the beauty of the signature Ducati tubular Trellis frame. The renowned strength and rigidity of the ALS 450 tubing has been further improved with complex triangulation and using the engine as a ‘stressed member.’

The beauty of wire-spoke wheels grace Ducati road bikes once again. Starting with an alloy hub, the new wheels use 36 chromed stainless steel spokes. 17” alloy Excel rims, famous in racing circles for their lightweight performance and durability, are used on the Sport 1000 and Sport 1000 S, while the GT 1000 is fitted with classic 17” chrome rims. Mounted to the rims are modern interpretations of classic sport tyres, replicating the original patterns, but with modern radial construction techniques and rubber compounds. The alloy hubs mount dual 320mm brake discs up front and a 245mm disc in the rear, both using lightweight black Brembo floating callipers to provide extra stopping power. Braking performance is further enhanced by classic black, steel-braided brake lines.

MOTOGIRO D’ITALIA
Ducati sponsors the Motogiro d’Italia, a historical re-enactment of one of the original long-distance road races in Italy. Motogiro, and its parade of hundreds of motorcycles old and new criss-crossing unforgettable Italian countryside, has become a point of reference for those passionate about vintage motorcycles and historic motorcycle events.

2007 RANGE MODELS
The Ducati SportClassics offer a range of designs that will satisfy the style of any rider who has the soul of a Ducatista.

The GT 1000: A bike to be ridden every day, with a balance of two-up comfort and Desmo performance. The Sport 1000 monoposto: A pure sport single seater, with classic Café Racer style and Ducati performance. The Sport 1000 biposto: A sport bike, with more comfort and seating for two in the classic Café Racer style. CELEBRATION OF ITALIAN STYLE

For 2007 only, the 1098 S is also available in an additional special 'Tricolore' version (red, white and green, the colours of the Italian national flag). The Ducati 'Tricolore' tradition began in 1985 with the stunning 750 F1 and then continued with the limited edition 851. The latest 'Tricolore' is a 1098 S with the additional features of frame and wheels finished in traditional 'racing gold' colours. In addition, a power-increasing 102 dB Termignoni racing muffler kit with dedicated ECU is supplied with the bike.

Suspension is of the very highest performance standard. The fully adjustable 43mm Öhlins FG511 forks, which sport low friction Titanium Nitride fork sliders, respond effortlessly to every imperfection in the tarmac. Beyond their advanced engineering solutions, one of the most important characteristics of Öhlins forks is their ability to communicate the condition and quality of the tyre-to-road contact patch, a feature that puts every rider in superior control. The suspension system is completed and perfectly balanced by using a fully adjustable Öhlins 46PRC rear shock with a ride enhancing top-out spring, controlling the single-sided swingarm for outstanding drive, traction and steering precision. The Öhlins package is completed with a control-enhancing adjustable steering damper.

The ‘S’ also sets a new standard for lightweight performance. On any sport or race bike, the most effective area to reduce weight is its “unsprung weight”. These are components like tyres, brakes and wheels. Lighter wheels have a lower ‘moment of inertia’ that is beneficial with every direction change and application of the brakes. The 1098 addresses this important area by mounting Marchesini forged and machined wheels, reducing weight by 1.9Kg (4lbs). Both front and rear are super lightweight and their benefit is immediately apparent. The weight saving is further enhanced with the application of a carbon fibre front fender.

The 1098 S is also supplied with the Ducati Data Analyzer system as standard equipment. The DDA package supplied with the ‘S’ version enables the retrieval of data and analysis of data collected from your previous track session or road trip. The DDA package includes software for your personal computer on CD, a data retrieval USB key and instructions.

Features and Benefits:

ENGINEERED BY THE STOPWATCH
The priority in every step of the 1098 development has been performance first. Every system, every detail and every component has been studied and pared down to its essence and performance increased to the maximum. If it didn’t make the 1098 lighter, faster or deliver quicker lap times, it wasn’t considered.

The result: the 1098 is the most powerful twin-cylinder motorcycle in the world with the highest torque-to-weight ratio of any sport bike. The 1098 is the lightest, fastest stopping, quickest lapping Ducati in history. For the first time Ducati MotoGP and World Superbike technology have been combined to create a premier street bike. The results are stunning.

DESIGNED BY THE RACETRACK
The look and stance of the 1098 were designed by the combination of race track technology, track-derived components and Ducati heritage. The 1098’s striking aerodynamic shape naturally embraces its riding position, configured by our racers and test riders for optimum speed and agility. The racing spirit takes form.

2007 RANGE MODELS
The Superbike is available in three versions: the awesome 1098; the 1098 S, for those who demand the ultimate in performance with the very best suspension, lightweight wheels and components; and the special 'Tricolore' in green white and red - the colours of the Italian national flag - with "Racing Gold" frame and wheels, plus Termignoni racing muffler kit with dedicated ECU.

1098 HIGHLIGHTS

THE NEW TESTASTRETTA EVOLUZIONE ENGINE

The Testastretta Evoluzione engine is the crowning glory of Ducati’s development and perfection of the L-Twin engine. World Superbike dominance for the last 15 years is the result of continual commitment to twin-cylinder technology and the 1098 Testastretta Evoluzione, the most powerful twin-cylinder production engine in history, is a fitting reward to our engineers’ continued ingenuity.

CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION

The 1098 chassis and suspension have received the same detailed study and performance first priority approach. The goal was to achieve considerable weight saving while building-in strength and rigidity to manage the new high-powered Testastretta Evoluzione engine. Each and every component not only contributes to achieving superior road holding and stability, but when assembled, become a system with value far greater than the sum of all its parts.

BRAKES WHEELS AND BODY

With a Superbike as capable as the 1098, superior stopping power is fundamental. The 1098 is the first production street bike to use Brembo’s Monobloc caliper racing technology. The M4-34 calipers are machined from a single piece of alloy, vs. the bolt-together construction of conventional calipers. The Monobloc design has much higher rigidity and resistance to distortion during extreme braking, and therefore gives a much more precise feel at the brake lever.

INSTRUMENTS, DATA AND LIGHTING

Desmosedici-style digital instrumentation is taken from Ducati’s MotoGP GP7 project. This pure racing, minimalist solution by Digitek has no switches or buttons to compromise its clean lines.

With the purchase of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA), which includes PC software, a USB-ready data retrieval card and instructions, owners are ready to review and analyse the performance of the 1098 and its rider, and make comparisons between various channels of information.

Readers of “Motorrad” and “In Moto” vote their “Motorcycle of the year 2007”

This time it was the votes of readers of two top-flight international magazines - the German publication “Motorrad” and the Italian mag “IN MOTO” - that decreed which would be the best motorcycle of 2007. Once again Ducati played a leading role, stealing the scene and winning both consensus and awards – clear indicators of the continuing worldwide success enjoyed by the latest “made in Borgo Panigale” models.

This international award involves some of the most important magazines in the industry. In Italy votes were gathered by the monthly magazine IN MOTO: on Tuesday 13th March, after counting up the 24,853 ballot papers sent in to the editors, the “Motorcycles of the year 2007” were finally made known.

Ducati triumphed in a good three of the eight categories into which the motorcycles were divided, winning first place among the sports models (with the superbly stylish and high performance 1098 of course) with 29.9% of the vote. The runner-up was the MV Agusta F4 1000 R and in third place it was Ducati yet again with the Desmosedici RR, the esoteric and exclusive MotoGP road replica. The Multistrada 1100 - in the road bikes category– also came up trumps by coming first with 12% of the votes, ahead of the Yamaha FZ1 Fazer and the Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport. In the enduro/supermotard category it was a landslide victory for the all-new Hypermotard (to be launched on the market in May): sweeping aside the competition, it took a massive 33.5% of the votes, beating the BMW R 1200 GS and KTM 950 Supermoto hands down.

During the night of 15th March, the renowned German magazine MOTORRAD which, with a circulation of 200,000 copies, is Europe’s most-read bike mag, also elected the best motorcycles of 2007: readers sent in a whopping 36,672 ballot papers.
Once again, there were eight categories and, once again, Ducati cornered the votes.

In the sports motorcycles category awards were won by two Ducatis; in first place came the 1098, with 12.1% of the vote, followed by the Desmosedici RR (11.2%). Like in Italy, it was a surprise victory for Ducati in the enduro/supermotard category where, with a percentage of 18.3%, the Hypermotard beat – playing away! – the German BMW GS 1200 (16.8 %).
Acknowledged by 29% of readers as the best sports motorcycle brand, Ducati trounced the opposition in this segment, too, winning over 29 % of the readers of this authoritative German publication, who preferred the “Reds of Borgo Panigale” to Suzuki (12.2%) and Yamaha (10.1%).

The Multistrada is available in two versions: The impressive Multistrada 1100 and, for those who demand the ultimate in sport performance, an all-conquering 'S' version, the Multistrada 1100 S.

DUCATI MULTISTRADA 1100

The new Multistrada 1100 widens the horizons of all those who are 'sport motorcyclists' at heart but still want a bike they can use seven days a week. Riding a Multistrada makes every road a thrill. The punchy new 1100 Desmo L-Twin engine delivers smoother, more tractable power delivery and, coupled with a refined chassis, delivers confident handling and optimal comfort, even over long distances.

The unmistakable Ducati Trellis frame combines with fully-adjustable suspension to adapt the bike to any road condition and every riding style, while rider comfort has been further improved with new vibration-isolated handlebars.

Superb road holding, a powerful new 1100 engine and all day comfort gives the versatile Multistrada a unique personality and character in true Ducati style.

The 1100 is the latest evolution of the Multistrada concept, introduced by Ducati at the start of 2003. It contains all of the innovations that helped to make the model a true point of reference for a totally new market segment.

The characteristic two-part nose fairing, with a transparent screen that moves with the handlebars, allows better than average steering manoeuvrability. The unique tank and seat assembly comes from a single moulding and provides a fuel capacity of 20 litres; one of the innovations on the Multistrada 1100 is the inclusion of a fuel reserve sensor. The joint action of the fuel level gauge and the new sensor guarantees a reliable and constant indication of the amount of fuel remaining in the tank at all times.

Two display management functions are new features on the 1100 model: trip fuel and auto 'light off' system. The former is an additional trip meter that is activated when the fuel reserve light is on, while the latter is a feature that automatically switches off the lights after 60 seconds of key-on if the engine is not running.

Other style features of the Multistrada that remain unchanged on the 1100 version are the front headlight cluster, the single-sided aluminium swingarm, the tail section and the aggressive exhaust unit.

Like the rest of the 2007 range the Multistrada 1100 fully complies with EURO 3 exhaust emissions: the lambda probe inside the muffler unit combined with a three-way catalytic converter ensure maximum efficiency. The function of the lambda probe is to detect the amount of oxygen present in exhaust gases and gauge the fuel mixture. In this way the oxygen concentration through the catalytic converter allows the correct chemical reaction and the three-way converter oxydizes the unburnt hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide and reduces the nitrogen oxides.

Chassis

The renowned Multistrada chassis remains unchanged, guaranteeing exceptional stability at speed, as well as fantastic agility through fast bends, thus allowing expert riders to find it easy to achieve blistering performance with the 1100.

The round tube Trellis frame is made from high quality steel (ALS 450) for maximum rigidity and precise directional control.

The fully adjustable suspension of the Multistrada 1100 features Marzocchi forks at the front with upside-down 43 mm stanchions. Adjustments for hydraulic compression and rebound damping as well as spring preload are standard.

The Sachs rear monoshock is equipped with a practical hydraulic remote control to adjust spring preload, which operates through Ducati's rising rate linkages.
The Multistrada is equipped with an exceptional braking system; two 320 mm semi-floating discs at the front wheel with two 4-piston Brembo callipers, while rear stopping power is provided by one 245 mm disc with one Brembo 2-piston calliper.

Starting with Model Year 2007 the entire Multistrada family benefits from new vibration-isolated handlebars, which through a pair of silent blocks contained in the specially-designed steering head increases rider comfort.

Engine

The Multistrada 1100 receives a boost in cylinder size thanks to an evolution of the renowned Desmodue air-cooled twin-cylinder engine. For this model the Ducati 1100 Dual Spark now has a displacement of 1078 cc, which offers truly powerful torque and extraordinary reliability.

The new engine benefits from a bore increase of 4 mm to 98 mm, vs. the 1000 Dual Spark's 94 mm. As a result the cylinder displacement is 1078 cc, a considerable increase on the 992 cc of the previous version.

This new engine now offers a power output of 95 HP at 7750 rpm and 10,5 Kgm of torque at 4750 rpm. These superb values contribute to the bike's rideability and the powerful mid-range delivery of this modern air-cooled engine highlights the sporting character of the new Multistrada 1100.

The engine has been designed to comply with the Euro 3 norms while, at the same time, boosting performance.

Compact, powerful and acknowledged as the ultimate expression of the Ducati philosophy of air-cooled twin design, the new 1100 Dual Spark Desmo engine that equips the Multistrada family represents the result of decades of experience and a whole series of innovations that extend from the combustion chambers to the crankshaft.

The end result is a powerful engine that is particularly exuberant in the mid-range and generally acknowledged as the most advanced air-cooled L-twin ever designed. In addition to offering the significant advantages of an air-cooled power plant, the 1100 DS also draws inspiration from the advanced Testastretta racing engine, including the special casting techniques used to make the cylinder heads, the use of oil-pressurized plain bearings to support the camshafts, and the angles and configuration of the valves.

All this, plus the exclusive Dual Spark ignition, with its "double flame front", offers more complete combustion, while simultaneously boosting mid-range power and reducing emission levels.

A closer look at the 1100 DS engine reveals a reduced angle between the intake and exhaust valves, one of the basic principles with which the renowned Testastretta engine was designed, which allows for a more compact combustion chamber, reducing the volume and thus obtaining improved combustion. The improved efficiency of the combustion chamber allows the engine to run on a leaner air/fuel mixture without compromising performance at high temperatures and significantly reduces emissions of hydrocarbons (HC).

The camshafts are supported on oil pressurized plain bearings, which reduce the overall dimensions, the weight, and the number of moving parts, while also improving heat dispersal. The new configuration also puts the camshafts in a more direct relationship with the valves, reducing friction and stress on valve components and thus increasing reliability. In fact, although the cylinder head is more compact, it allows more space for the intake and exhaust valves, these being 45 mm and 40 mm in diameter respectively. Further innovations include valve seats made of beryllium bronze, a technologically advanced material that affords better heat dispersal and wear-resistance and thus maintains valve clearances more accurately over a longer period of time.

To guarantee high mid-range performance, the crankshaft, cylinders and pistons have been designed to obtain a bore and stroke value of 98 mm and 71.5 mm respectively. The pistons are fitted with nitrided steel rings, which afford improved sealing and significantly reduce oil consumption. The connecting rods are made from a new material composition (30NiCrMo4) that has exceptional flow characteristics during forging. In cross section, the new rods are thinner side-to-side, but wider fore to aft, increasing strength and lowering weight for increased reliability and performance.
The crankshaft is of a more compact design and the oil passages have been strategically repositioned in areas less critical for its structural strength. The result is a crankshaft that is more rigid and with less flex, making for less vibration and improved reliability.

The 1100 Dual Spark engine also features a new 'wet' clutch that has lighter lever effort, is quieter and more modular than a dry clutch and is characterized by having exceptional wear-resistance.

Thanks to an excellent compromise between performance, reliability, noise and lever effort, this clutch is ideal for sports riding and at the same time offers ensures a more progressive action and feel.

The overall look of the engine is characterized by injection-moulded timing belt covers in black, high mechanical and thermal resistance plastic. The engine covers are in a new dark grey colour.

Starting with the entire 2007 range Ducati has introduced a new maintenance programme in which servicing intervals have been extended, and less parts are required and fewer operations are performed, thus reducing the bike's overall running costs by up to 50%.

THE "MONSTER SUPERBIKE" WITH TRACK-PERFECT PERFORMANCE

The legendary Testastretta engine now powers the leading street fighter motorcycle. Designed with the most experienced riders in mind, who expect the best in terms of technology, performance and componentry, the Monster S4R S sets a new standard in the category, benefiting from all the experience gained in the World Superbike Championship.

The L-twin Testastretta engine is a milestone on the historic journey of sport motorcycles. Testastretta technology allows a reduced angle between the intake and exhaust valves. The result is a clean, compact combustion chamber that is also highly efficient: the flat-crown pistons provide a perfectly smooth combustion environment and linear flame front. The special design of the heads, together with the cutting-edge electronic engine control system, guarantees optimal combustion throughout the rev range and makes for smooth, potent power delivery.

The Testastretta engine features a piston stroke of 63.5 mm and a bore of 100 mm: the short stroke limits average piston speed to allow increased RPMs and improve overall reliability. An exclusive oil pump feeding system is built into the deep sump crankcase to ensure an even oil flow rate during the most dramatic acceleration and braking, or extreme cornering.

The chassis and running gear on this bike are unparalleled. The fully adjustable Ohlins suspension at both ends is complemented by Y-shaped five spoke rims that improve the rigidity/weight ratio compared to traditional wheels and enable a reduction of the unsprung weight for better handling. The 320 mm twin disc Brembo brakes on the front have radial-mounted calipers with four pistons and four pads. Radial-mounting guarantees a more rigid caliper-fork mount assembly, thus improving the efficiency of the brake system.

Several details - the silencer cover, exhaust heat plate, front mudguard and cam belt covers are produced in carbon fiber, contributing to the overall weight reduction and making this Monster look even more exclusive. Even a top performance bike such as this can be environmentally responsible, as the Monster S4Rs Testastretta complies with the stringent Euro3 emission control standards.

*Note: The Monster S4R S will be available Summer 2006 as a 2007 model.

2007 MSRP $14,995 USD ($19,995 CND)

2007 Ducati Monster 695

695 is not merely a name, a number or an engine size. 695 represents a most unique offering in the world of motorcycles and in the Ducati Monster family; it is a motorcycle that is welcoming to novice riders but, at the same time, is a Ducati, delivering a level of performance that can even thrill more advanced riders.

While remaining the entry point to the Ducati Monster family of motorcycles, the Ducati Monster 695 transforms a motorcyclist into a Ducatista.

Ducatisti are members of a tribe of fans whose motorcycle looks, feels and sounds like no other.

The Monster 695, a preview of the Model Year 2007, replaces the 620, and is a quantum leap forward in terms of handling, riding pleasure and performance. The potent new 695 cc L-Twin delivers much greater horsepower and torque - the highest output per cc of any Ducati air-cooled engine - while producing smoother and more fluid power, making every twist of the throttle exciting and satisfying.

A Monster is born

When Ducati unveiled the Monster 900 at the Cologne Show in the autumn of 1992, it created an overnight sensation. Today the streets of the world pulse with the rumble of more than 170,000 Monsters.

The original 'naked' motorcycle, the Monster introduced a unique street fighter attitude to a new generation of Ducati fans. The 'look' is defined by its essential approach to motorcycle design, with its bodywork pared down to the minimum and its characteristic twin-cylinder engine fully visible.

One of the most popular Monsters of all time is the Monster 600, which was presented in 1994. The 600 introduced a less intimidating, yet high quality and performance entry into the world of Ducati. The sales success of this, the lightest and most versatile model in the range, was amazing, and it remains an important contributor in creating the iconic status that the Monster enjoys today.

Growing popularity led to the introduction of the Monster 600 Dark in 1998. The idea of the Dark was born based on the observation that so many Monsters were being customized and what better place to start than with the 'blank canvas' of the Dark's black matte paint job. The 'Dark' became a style unto itself with its understated attitude and even more essential and fashionable look.

The next stage in development was a substantial restyling of the entire Monster family in 2000. Fuel tank, seat, tail section, and many other components were reshaped and modernised.

2002 saw the first major re-engineering of the original 600 with the launch of the Monster 620 i.e. It was the first middleweight Monster to be fuel injected, and this was combined with significant engine, frame and suspension advancements and updates. The result was a more powerful, smoother running bike that achieved new levels of reliability and efficiency.

This long success story now sets the stage for the next evolution of middleweight Monsters, and the introduction of the new DUCATI Monster 695.

TECHNICAL ADVANCEMENTS

The Engine

The engine of the 695 is the most important technical advancement, and much more than an additional 77 cc of displacement might indicate. The new L-Twin delivers new levels of horsepower and torque, but maintains a smooth and fluid power delivery that ensures an exciting performance in all conditions.

The 695's increase in displacement was achieved with the application of an even more 'over-square' design compared to the 620. The enlargement of the cylinder bore from 80mm to 88mm and the reduction in the stroke from 61.5mm to 57.2mm results in a larger combustion chamber which allows the use of larger intake and exhaust valves, as well as 17% lower piston speeds for greater reliability.

The 620's intake and exhaust valves were 41 mm and 35 mm respectively, while the 695 boasts 43mm and 38mm valves. The larger valves and seats are matched to larger ports with the net result being improved flow capabilities and increased power. Although the valve faces are larger in diameter, the valves remain light thanks to the change to 7mm valve stems, as used in our Testastretta engines, versus the 8mm stems of the 620.

The end result is that the 63 horsepower of the 620 has been increased to 73HP for the 695, the highest output per cubic centimetre of all our Ducati air-cooled engines. Of course there is a significant increase in torque from the already impressive 5.7Kgm of the 620, to an outstanding 6.2Kgm for the 695.

The Monster 695 takes full advantage of the Ducati exclusive Adler Power Torque Clutch, a unique system that makes the 695 even friendlier, safer and more comfortable. It provides an amazingly light clutch pull that is a true benefit especially in urban riding, where frequent stops require frequent clutch use.

Another advantage of the 'slipper' clutch, typically found on race bikes, is that it reduces the destabilizing rear wheel "lock-up" or "chatter" phenomenon when downshifting abruptly or inelegantly. It also benefits advanced riders, and racers alike, for the very same reasons.

Exhaust system

The Monster 695's two traditional aluminium oval silencers are combined with advanced features of a new exhaust system.

A lambda (oxygen) sensor has been employed on the horizontal exhaust manifold, and this, combined with advanced electronic fuel injection, managed by a powerful Magneti Marelli 5AM ECU, guarantees an optimal air/fuel ratio in ever-changing conditions.

Two larger catalytic converters manufactured with more advanced materials are housed inside the two silencers.

The combination of the lambda sensor, the new catalytic converters and advanced electronics allow the 695 to responsibly adhere to the tough new Euro3 emission standards.

Of course standard equipment includes the uniquely beautiful and throaty Ducati exhaust note. The unmistakable sound is music to the ears of Ducatisti - a symphony of internal combustion.

Chassis

The new engine clearly needs to be mated to a similarly advanced frame, and the Monster 695 takes full advantage of the confidence-inspiring road-holding and stability of the unique Ducati trellis frame design. The Trellis frame is light, rigid and beautiful, and distinctively Ducati.

The rider's environment on the 695 is a perfect mix of sporting character and a confident upright rider position that allows optimal control and comfort. Every Monster 695 rider will feel perfectly at ease thanks to Ducati's lowest seat height, which is 30 mm lower than all other Monsters.

The Monster 695 sports quality Marzocchi 43 mm inverted forks and a Sachs rear shock with adjustable spring preload and rebound damping.

At the front, the 695 employs a Brembo braking system made up of two 300 mm floating discs, together with floating twin-piston calipers. The single 245 mm rear disc sports a fixed twin-piston Brembo caliper.

Instrument panel

As on every model in the Monster family, the electronic dash is multi-functional, allowing the rider to switch to either the oil temperature or clock readout even while riding.

It is also possible to dim the instrument's illumination should they be too intense during night riding.

The odometer and trip metre readings are indicated on a LCD. An anti-theft system is standard equipment, and its status is displayed on the instrument panel.

A new look and finish

The Monster 695 introduces new graphics and appealing new colour treatments in line with its increased performance.

The trellis frame and engine area has a new 'clean' and uncluttered look, as electrical wires and connectors have been hidden, and the need for numerous wire ties has been eliminated. What's left is the simple elegance of the trellis frame surrounding the potent new 695 engine.

Three different colour schemes are available with the 695:

2002 traditional Ducati Red, with red frame and black wheels
2003 aggressive Glossy Black, with red frame and black wheels
2004 distinctive Matte Black, with matte black frame and black wheels

At the front end of the bike, the upper and lower fork crowns, along with the lower fork caliper mounts, disc carriers and headlamp support, formerly raw aluminium in colour, are now matte black. The high performance theme is further extended to the rear of the bike with a black swingarm and footpeg brackets. Both engine and clutch cases are also now black, a classic racer 'look' just recently reintroduced on the Sport Classic series. The black theme is finally harmonized with matte black wheels to complete this new Monster's attitude.

New graphics include a subtle colour change to the Ducati logo on the fuel tank with the subdued silver of the 620 now realized in a bolder pure white for the 695. The side covers have the word 'Monster' in a much larger font, followed by an even more dominating '695' to boldly proclaim the bike's new found status. Also new is the application of the Italian "tricolore", a flash of red, white and green at the back of each side cover, to proudly announce the 695's national heritage.

Maintenance

Ongoing investment in the Ducati factory's processes, machinery and training has reaped significant and quantifiable improvements in component reliability on every Ducati motorcycle. As a result, every new Monster 695 owner benefits from an extended, less frequent scheduled maintenance programme, which does not call for the first complete service until 12,000 Km (7,500 miles).
