Chassis/Suspension:

Rugged, diamond-type, high-tensile steel frame

Lightweight, box section swingarm is fitted with easy-to-use eccentric chain adjusters. There are grease fittings at the swingarm pivot points.

33mm front fork with 160mm (6.3") of wheel travel soaks up the bumps for a plush ride. Rubber fork boots keep dirt out of fork seals for extended life.

Monocross link rear suspension uses a single rear shock. Rear wheel travel is 150mm (5.9") to smooth the roughest trails.

The 2009 Yamaha YZ85 may be the smallets member of the YZ family, but it's a big-time competitor. It's got the power to win with a liquid-cooled, 85cc engine, 6-speed gearbox, and adjustable suspension up front and out back. This is one mighty mini.

The mini racer of choice. Born from the award winning YZ competition bikes, YZ 85 features a liquid-cooled, 84.7cc crankcase reed-valve-inducted six-speed that is compact and light. You also get an ultra-rigid, single backbone, semi-double-cradle frame, fully adjustable suspension and more to suit a wide range of rider from novice to mini expert.

With the same chassis and engine technology that goes into every 2-stroke YZ, the scaled-down YZ85 is a true competitor.

The YZ85, with its ultra-rigid high-tensile steel frame and 36mm inverted forks, weighs just 55kg (126lbs.) Powered by a compact but muscular liquid-cooled 85cc engine pumping the power through a six-speed gearbox, this bike's engineered to catch some major air -- and trophies, too. Fully adjustable suspensions, front and rear disc brakes and almost 11" of wheel travel highlight "for competition use only." Truly, this is full-sized performance in a scaled-down package.

Chassis/Suspension:

Rigid, semi-double cradle steel frame is ultra-lightweight and incredibly strong providing minimal flex for razor-sharp moto-wining handling

Detachable rear subframe allows easy access for suspension maintenance

Lightweight box-section aluminium swingarm provides excellent rigidity for awesome rear wheel control and traction.

Lightweight, adjustable 36mm inverted Kayaba cartridge fork provides 275mm (10.8") of wheel travel and adjusts for compression and rebound damping. Adjustments include: 20 clicks of both compression and rebound damping. Their construction offers YZ125/250 type valving and low-friction seals to ensure a smooth, compliant stroke for superior suspension performance and handling. Optional fork springs are available through Yamaha Genuine Parts and Accessories.

Monocross link rear suspension features a fully adjustable Kayaba piggyback shock providing 282mm (11.1") of wheel travel. The piggyback design helps to keep the shock cool during a long moto to provide fade resistant damping and consistent performance. Adjustments include spring preload, 20 clicks of compression and 20 clicks of rebound damping. Optional shock springs are available through Yamaha Genuine Parts and Accessories.

220mm front disc with twin piston caliper and stainless steel rotor deliver strong stopping power with excellent control and great feedback. "Shorty style" adjustable brake lever can be tailored to fit various hand sizes.

190mm stainless steel rear disc brake is squeezed by a single piston caliper. The caliper is protected by a rugged plastic protector.

Lightweight 17" front and 14" rear DID rims provide exceptional durability and help reduce unsprung weight for optimal suspension performance.

Premium Dunlop knobby tires enhance traction and cornering on a wide variety of tracks and terrain.

Based on the latest generation of our YZ four stroke motocrossers, the WR250F features a lightweight aluminum frame and swingarm, stylish "slim line" bodywork specially designed to provide excellent rider maneuverability and YZ based suspension and brakes fore and aft.

Engine:

Liquid-cooled, 249cc, 5-valve, DOHC, 4-stroke powerplant with super light titanium valves is based on the current YZ250F engine design. The WR250F engine features different camshafts, ECU and exhaust system than the YZ250F for improved low to mid range power which is better suited for enduro type riding.

Super convenient electric starting means fast, sure starts. The electric starter is also backed up by a manual kick starter.

Hassle free automatic decompression system ensures fast restarts in any gear.

Convenient, handlebar-mounted hot start lever for easy restarts when the engine is hot.

Magnesium cylinder head cover helps reduce weight.

Optimized combustion chamber design provides the most efficient intake and exhaust flow for maximum engine performance

Titanium valves and load-reduced springs decrease weight by more than 40% over a conventional valve train and reduce reciprocating mass for faster-revving, smoother-hitting power delivery across the rev range.

Special cylinder design features cutaways that allow the air "trapped" under the piston to enter a side chamber (or cutaway) to reduce horsepower-robbing "pumping losses."

The crankcase also utilizes cutaways to reduce "pumping losses." The crankcase cutaways match the cutaways in the cylinder.

Dry sump oil tank is located in front of the engine between the frame tubes for protection. This design centralizes mass and reduces the centre of gravity for improved handing and a lighter feel.

The crankcase features a "tri-axis" design for the crankshaft, main and drives axles. This tri-axis design keeps the crankcases more compact while also centralizing mass for better handling. All of the shafts are positioned low in the cases to maintain a low centre of gravity for great handling and maneuverability.

Special "enduro focused" camshafts (intake & exhaust) provide outstanding low to mid range power well suited for off road use. The cam timing and event angle are different than the YZ250F.

Balancer shaft reduces vibration for improved rider comfort and reduced rider fatigue.

Lightweight crankshaft provides fast throttle response.

Lightweight, short-skirt, forged piston provides great durability and its lightweight design means faster engine response.

Oil volume in engine has been optimized to reduce weight and oil "drag" related power losses.

Compact design automatic cam chain tensioner reduces maintenance and mechanical engine noise.

37mm, Keihin FCR, flat-slide carburetor with TPS (throttle position sensor) provides excellent throttle response.

ECU features 3D ignition mapping to accommodate the engine power characteristics. The ECU provides optimal timing at all rpms for fast engine response.

Lightweight direct ignition coil is integrated into the plug cap to reduce weight and complexity

Wide ratio 5-speed transmission features gear ratios designed for enduro type riding and that match the engine's power characteristics.

Heavy-duty clutch matches engine output and offers a light, progressive clutch feel with less lever effort for smoother shifting.

Quick-access, lightweight aluminum outer clutch cover allows fast, easy access to the clutch.

Stylish mat black finish on left & right side crankcase covers, oil filter cover and sprocket cover for improved appearance.

YZ based compact dual radiators provide optimum cooling and feature a re-enforcing bar to help protect the rads in the event of a tip over.

Washable, dual-stage, foam air filter can be accessed without tools via "Dzus-type" fasteners. The air box is secured to the frame via only one bolt for fast removal.

Lightweight exhaust system features a stainless steel header pipe with titanium heat shield, aluminum muffler and titanium rear cone. This system maximizes engine power and allows hassle-free replacement of the oil filter.

Lightweight aluminum wrapped muffler offers an 82 dba noise level (stock settings). This muffler features a "serviceable", screen-type spark arrestor which prevents sparks from exiting the exhaust.

Oversize race type "barrel adjuster" for easy, on-the-fly adjustability of clutch lever/cable play.

AIS (air induction system), located on front side of cylinder head reduces harmful emissions.





Chassis/Suspension:

Lightweight, compact aluminum semi-double-cradle frame features a cast steering head while the remainder of the frame uses forged, pipe stock and extruded components. Yamaha has maintained the semi double cradle design to allow for "controlled flex" to optimize suspension action. This frame design provides a low centre of gravity for a light feel and razor sharp handling, plus less rider fatigue, and excellent stability.

Removable, aluminum rear sub frame constructed of square-section pipe reduces weight and provides easy rear suspension access.

Lightweight, tapered, aluminum swingarm is produced using "hydro forming"; a special forming method that uses high pressure water to form shapes.

48mm, adjustable inverted Kayaba cartridge fork provide excellent suspension performance. Front wheel travel is 300mm (11.8").

Front fork adjustments include: 20-way compression damping and 20-way rebound damping. Optional fork springs are available through Genuine Yamaha parts.

Large plastic fork protectors wrap around the fork tubes for increased protection against dirt, mud and stone chips. These fork protectors are self-supporting to reduce friction for smoother fork operation.

Forged aluminum upper and lower triples clamp reduce weight and provide increased strength.

Adjustable forged handlebar mounts allow the handlebars to be moved 10mm rearward if desired.

High tech, lightweight, Pro-Taper aluminum handlebar with reinforcing crossbar and protective foam pad.

Monocross rear suspension system features a fully adjustable, Kayaba "piggy back" style shock with separate adjusters for high- and low-speed compression damping.

Shock adjustments include: spring preload, 20 clicks of low-speed compression damping, 2 turns of high-speed compression damping and 20 clicks of rebound damping. Rear wheel travel is 310mm (12.2").

Link-type rear suspension provides a rising rate (progressive) suspension function. The linkage design is virtually the same as YZ-F series of MX bikes.

250mm fully floating front disc brake with "wave style" rotor is squeezed by a twin piston Nissin caliper fitted with lightweight, aluminum pistons provides excellent braking performance.

"Shorty style" adjustable front brake lever.

245mm rear disc utilizes a lightweight "wave style" rotor. The Nissin single piston caliper and an integrated rear master cylinder (fluid reservoir is integrated into the top of the master cylinder to reduce weight) delivers strong, progressive stopping power with excellent control and feel.

Rugged, Excel 21" front and 18" rear rims provide exceptional durability and help reduce unsprung weight for optimal suspension performance.

High tech, lightweight digital meter assembly. This compact meter features: speedometer, dual tripmeters, odometer and a clock in the basic mode. Or in the "race mode", pace management functions such as timer, and distance compensating tripmeter.

Rugged "slim-line" bodywork is very similar to the YZ-F counterparts. This "slim line" bodywork allows fast, easy rider movements and a lighter overall machine feel.

Seat is based on YZ-F style but is wider with more padding for improved rider comfort during a long ride.

Stylish slim design front headlight is compact and offers 35 watts of lighting power. The headlight beam is adjustable up and down.

Slim design compact LED taillight is tucked out of the way to prevent damage

8 liter black plastic fuel tank is designed to allow easy rider movements. The tank features a special "fluorination surface treatment" which reduces fuel permeation for improved environmental protection. The fuel line and tank vent hose are made of "fluororubber" to also reduce the escape of fuel vapors into the atmosphere.

Lightweight aluminum kickstand is designed to allow lots of ground clearance.

Heavy duty one piece resin plastic engine guard. Only 3 bolts hold it in place for easy removal when washing the bike.

Extra wide 55mm stainless steel foot pegs provide excellent grip.

Electric starting system features a mechanical centrifugal decompression device in the exhaust camshaft for easy, no-hassle starting.

Liquid-cooling not only allows for higher state of tune because it maintains more stable operating temperatures, but also reduces mechanical noise for a quieter engine.

In an effort to maintain the classic air-cooled appearance of the engine, cooling fins have been added as a styling touch.

The short stroke engine design reduces the "tallness" of the engine, while the 60 degree "V" makes the engine more compact thereby centralizing mass and lowering the center of gravity for lighter more responsive handling.

Classic V-twin "pulse feeling" and engine character highlight this powerplant while annoying vibration has been eliminated.

One-piece cylinder heads feature 4-valves per cylinder to provide optimum breathing efficiency for maximum power output. Each head is fitted with a single long reach spark plug.

The SOHC valve train features 36mm intake and 32mm exhaust valves with single springs for great power and torque. Valves are set at 20 degrees. Specially designed roller rockers activate the valves. The roller rocker system allows a greater amount of valve lift without producing excessive camshaft wear and friction. The slipper portion of the rocker arm features a needle bearing to further reduce wear and slide resistance. The camshafts have been specially designed to provide class leading power.

Optimized squish area forces the fuel / air mixture toward the centre of the combustion chamber for more complete combustion and hence power.

The water pump which is integrated with the oil pump and is located inside the engine cases to keep a cleaner, more traditional air-cooled look to the powerplant. The engine is a wet sump design.

The radiator is mounted between the front frames down tubes to minimize its appearance especially when viewing the machine from the side. Even the rad hoses have been discreetely placed for a cleaner appearance. An electric fan aids in cooling in stop and go traffic. Special cooling louvers direct air to the rad.

Automatic hydraulic cam chain tensioners reduces mechanical noise and extend engine life.

Ceramic composite-plated cylinders reduce weight, increase cylinder life and provide uniform heat dissipation. The cylinders have a tapered "V" appearance to highlight the V-twin design. Cylinder bore is 100mm.

Forged pistons offer great durability and reduced weight for faster engine response.

3 axis crankshaft features a single crank pin design. The crankshaft turns counter clockwise. This specially designed crank helps to enhance the pulse feeling and engine character.

Classic side mounted 3.7 liter airbox houses a viscous paper-type filter and adds that special styling touch.

Mikuni dual bore, 40mm returnless-type throttle body fuel injection system with TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and ISC (Idle Speed Control) . This is a "closed loop" system that utilizes an oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor feedback info to the ECU which in turn adjusts the fuel/air mixture for maximum power with minimum emissions. The oxygen sensor is located before the mufflers, so the use of slip-ons will not effect this system. Bore size is 40mm and each injector features 12 holes and a dual spray pattern for better fuel atomization and more complete combustion chamber filling. There is one injector per cylinder. Fuel injection benefits include improved fuel economy, chokeless operation, reduced emissions, and smoother running.

Word on the street: V-Max is back! The legend continues...


There’s been talk on the street for some while, bikers chatting in hushed tones about the rumoured return of The Legend. Now it’s official, Yamaha has proudly announced that one of the most talked about bikes of the last quarter of a century is back, except this time it’s bigger and better than ever before.

The all-new V-max was launched outside Madrid on the evening of June 4, where the world’s media were entertained by drag-car races and jetfighter flybys before they got to see the real thing – enormous horsepower (200 PS) of metal muscle, a tower of power that unleashes mind-boggling acceleration, created for riders who know that might is right.


The new V-Max stays true to the original V-Max concept, it’s a drag bike for the street, powered by the philosophy of genuine hot-rod performance and design, built for the adrenaline rush, pure and simple.

So what’s different about the new V-Max? We’ve already told you that it’s got heaps more horsepower than the original. But that’s only half the story. The new V-Max is way beyond anything you’ve seen out on the street.


That 1,679 cc V4 engine is the centrepiece of a radical automotive sculpture that will bring whole neighbourhoods to a halt. And it’s not just got horsepower, it’s got radical high-tech horsepower, aided by cutting-edge Yamaha electronics technology from our race programme: Yamaha Chipped Controlled Intake (Y.C.C.I) and Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (Y.C.C.T).

The rest of the new V-Max is just as pumped-up and tricked-out: cast aluminium frame, underseat fuel tank, six-piston brakes with ABS, magnesium engine cases, electroluminescent dash panel, LED tail light and mega-wide 200/50-R18 rear tyre.


1985: The birth of a legend
Back in the ’80s the big V8 muscle car was the undisputed boss on the strip in the USA, and in both the car and the bike drag race scene, the large-capacity engine was king. A quarter of a century ago, cubic capacity ruled – and Yamaha captured the true spirit of the time with the introduction of the awesome VMAX in 1985. With its massive 1,198cc V4, 4-stroke, 4-valve DOHC engine kicking out 140PS, this radically-styled muscle bike became an instant legend which established itself as the definitive cult-bike. With around 100,000 units sold during its production run that spanned three decades, the original VMAX made history by being included in the Guggenheim Museum’s ‘Art of the Motorcycle’ exhibition while still in production. There has never been anything to beat it…until now…

2008: The rebirth of a legend
During the late 90’s Yamaha’s VMAX project team started to work on the rebirth of a legend. The team understand just how special the original VMAX is to its owners – as well as those fans who admired the bike without ever riding one. The project team identified a set of four goals that would enable them to create a worthy successor to the legendary original model.

Powering the new VMAX is all-new 1,679cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke DOHC 65 degree V4 engine* whose imposing in-your-face design offers you an unforgettable acceleration experience created by awesome levels of power.

Chassis Features

Newly-designed low-profile aluminium frame
As well as featuring an all-new engine, the new VMAX is equipped with a completely new advanced-specification aluminium frame. This high-tech design has been built to deliver high levels of handling performance, allowing you to optimize the huge potential of the remarkably powerful 1,679cc V4 engine.

The VMAX’s new diamond-type frame has been developed using Yamaha’s industry-leading chassis design and manufacturing technology, and features an immensely strong yet lightweight structure that is made up from a variety of gravity-cast, CF die-cast and extruded aluminium sections. This innovative new design incorporates gravity-cast components for the main frame and pivot assembly, while the rear frame is made from a range of Yamaha’s exclusive CF die-cast parts and extruded parts which are welded together.

This combination of these different types of aluminium, each with a different rigidity level, is one of the major factors in achieving the desired balance of rigidity. To fine-tune this balance even further for excellent handling and accurate rider feedback, the wall thickness on the main frame varies from between 3mm through to 6mm.

An imaginary straight line drawn between the swingarm pivot and head pipe runs right through the centre of the V-bank, and this layout makes for neutral handling characteristics. And by incorporating the V4 engine as a stressed member – using cast-iron mounts at the front, the centre of the V bank, and at the top and bottom of the crankcase – the overall chassis rigidity balance is further enhanced.

There’s no doubt that the original VMAX established a reputation with its owners as one of the most awesome straight line performers, and this aspect of the machine’s character has been taken to an even higher level with the new chassis! With an extended wheelbase of 1,700mm the new model’s advanced aluminium chassis is built to handle the massive power and torque output that can be released when you twist the throttle. Significantly, the new bike’s 662.5mm swingarm allows you to lay down the 1,679cc V4 engine’s power more effectively then ever.


Large-diameter forks with oxidized titanium coating
We think you’ll agree with us when we say that virtually everything about the stunning new VMAX sets it apart from any other motorcycle, from its mighty V4 engine through to its radical styling and intimidating image. And it’s the same with the new front forks, whose massive tubes are perfectly in keeping with this bike’s muscular image.

These huge 52mm tubes offer excellent rigidity combined with smooth fork action – and they benefit from an oxidized titanium coating that ensures increased surface hardness and stiction-free operation – while the moody dark finish perfectly complements the black frame and engine.

The new front suspension is designed to deliver a smooth ride with neutral handling characteristics, and is fully adjustable for preload, as well as rebound and compression damping, allowing you to customise the ride to suit various situations from solo or two-up riding through to leisurely or fast riding.

And it’s not only the massive 52mm tubes that put these forks in a league of their own – they also feature special two-piece outer tubes. Consisting of an extremely rigid cast lower section incorporating the radial-mounted brake callipers, together with an extruded aluminium upper section which has been precision-machined for superior suspension action, these special front forks characterize the VMAX’s inherent style, first-class quality and advanced technology.

The combination of flex-resistant 52mm tubes, a cast aluminium upper triple clamp and forged aluminium lower triple clamp, as well as a wide pitch of 225mm, and 30mm offset, ensure that you can enjoy a neutral steering feeling for greater riding pleasure.


Link-type Monocross rear suspension
The new VMAX rear suspension is a link-type Monocross system which, like the new front forks, is fully adjustable for preload, as well as for compression and rebound damping – meaning that you can set the bike up to suit most situations.

And to make life easier, the new VMAX is equipped with a hydraulic remote adjuster for preload setting, while a remote control dial beneath the tandem footrest adjusts the compression damping. Another remote control dial beneath the left-side swingarm allows easy adjustment of the rear shock’s rebound damping.

The full adjustability of both the front and rear suspension systems is more commonly associated with supersport models, and allows the new VMAX rider to optimise the ride quality on their machine for outstanding roadholding.


Large-diameter front and rear wave-type brake discs
With all the advanced chassis technology we’ve described so far, you won’t be surprised to discover that the braking system we’ve developed for the new VMAX is one of the most sophisticated and powerful designs ever seen on a Yamaha motorcycle. At the front end, dual 320mm diameter wave-type discs are gripped by radial-mounted 6-piston callipers for excellent stopping power – and for superb feel, the master cylinder features a radial-type pump.

And for strong, confidence-inspiring braking, the new VMAX runs with a 298mm wave-type rear disc slowed by a pin-slide type single-piston calliper.

 

Linear-controlled ABS system
The VMAX is equipped with a newly-developed linear-controlled hydraulic ABS system which is designed to enhance braking control over a variety of road surfaces and in varying riding conditions. The hydraulic control system is activated by a linear solenoid valve which prevents wheel lock-up during braking, allowing the rider to experience smooth lever action and achieve effective braking on different types of road.

This innovative and compact ABS system combines the ECU and hydraulic mechanism into a single unit which is situated under the seat. By keeping the system’s dimensions to a minimum, neither the machine’s aesthetics or weight have been compromised, and the positioning of the unit ensures that overall mass centralisation is enhanced for neutral handling.

 

18 inch front and rear wheels
For natural handling qualities the VMAX is equipped with 18 inch front and rear wheels which are shod with specially-developed tyres that are designed to offer the optimum balance of grip, shock absorption and roadholding. With a 120/70-R18 front and a massive 200/50-R18 rear, this outstanding motorcycle is equipped to lay down its awesome levels of power and torque like no other machine.

 

Lightweight bodywork for effective mass centralisation
Mass centralisation has been one of the key goals for the VMAX development team, and a short test ride on the machine will reveal that its handling performance is truly impressive. During the machine’s exhaustive development and testing phase, every effort has been made to use lightweight materials wherever possible – and at the same time, to locate heavier components close to the bike’s centre of mass.

One of the most significant factors in achieving an idealised mass centralisation is the positioning of the 15-litre fuel tank under the seat. Manufactured from light fluorinated polyethylene, the tank is easily accessed by means of a convenient single-handed lever with a built-in damper which underlines the quality and attention to detail on this class-leading muscle bike.

These measures play an important role in shaping the neutral handling characteristics of this machine, whose roadholding, steering and overall chassis performance raise the bar in the muscle bike category. And just like the engine, the new aluminium chassis has to be experienced to be appreciated!

 

Tank-mounted multi-function instruments
Mounted on top of the dummy fuel tank is a multi-function Organic Electro-Luminescent “OEL” instrument panel which displays a wide range of information on its 256x64 dot display. This newly designed OEL panel gives a bright, easy-to-read display and offers an instant response, and its functions include odometer, tripmeter, clock, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, gear position, running fuel consumption, intake air temperature and throttle opening, as well as a stopwatch with a countdown function.

Just about all the information you could ever wish for is displayed right there in front of you at the touch of a button!

 

Muscular new design
The fact that the styling on the original VMAX remained largely unchanged for 24 years is a tribute to the immense strength and unique character of its original design. Creating a worthy successor to this iconic motorcycle posed many challenges for Yamaha’s team of designers, and the new VMAX utilises the latest designs and materials to create a truly modern work of art that is clearly the 21st century manifestation of the old master.

While the original VMAX embodied the spirit of the drag strip – combined with a brutal bodybuilder-style image – the new model has been designed to radiate a feeling of massive internal strength which hints at the awesome power just waiting to be unleashed at any time.

Key to this imagery are the four massive air intakes, the muscular V4 engine, and the four short upswept mufflers, which serve to underline the intimidating beauty of this single-minded high-performance motorcycle.

All-new liquid-cooled, 1,679cc, DOHC, 16-valve, 65°, V-4 engine has no
equal in its class. This new engine is more compact front to back allowing
the engineers to place the engine in the "sweet spot" of the frame.


DOHC 4-valve "pent roof" cylinder head design provides optimum
breathing efficiency for incredible engine performance. Valve actuation is
via under bucket shims. Compression ratio is 11.3:1.


Steel valves are used for excellent durability. Intake valves are 34mm in
diameter with a 14-degree valve angle while exhaust valves are 30mm with a
15 degree valve angle.


New "combination" chain and gear camshaft drive system is utilized.
With this system, only the intake cams are driven by a chain (attached to
the crank), the exhaust cams are driven by a gear drive off the intake cams.
This design allows for more compact cylinder heads since the distance or "pitch"
between the camshafts can be reduced.


Newly designed high-performance camshafts provide incredible engine performance.
Centrifugal decompression device on the exhaust cam means fast, easy starting.


Automatic hydraulic cam chain tensioners reduce engine mechanical noise.


Lightweight, forged, aluminium short skirt pistons help provide fast throttle
response, reduced vibration and provide excellent durability.


Connecting rods are carburized and use a nutless design. The lower end "cap"
of the rod is made from the same piece of material as the upper portion; this
design is known as "fracture splitting". This design aids in establishing
true big end roundness, greater precision in con rod dimensions and are extremely
durable.


New design 180-degree crankshaft is utilized.


Gear-driven engine counter balancer shaft is used to reduce vibration and
maximize rider comfort. The balance ratio is 50% to allow some pulse feel.
Since the crank design is 180 degrees, there is also some inherent natural
balancing effect as well.


Twin radiator design features a curved upper rad and lower flat rad for maximum
cooling efficiency. Each rad has its own cooling fan.


An oil-to-coolant heat exchanger type oil cooler maintains stable lubricant
temperatures for increased performance and extended engine life.


Wet sump oil lubrication system is used and features a spin-on cartridge-type
oil filter.


Mikuni fuel injection system uses four 48mm throttle bodies fitted with T.P.S.
(Throttle Position Sensor) and numerous other sensors. An oxygen sensor has
been fitted into the exhaust making this a "closed loop" type FI
system. The benefits include excellent throttle response, great fuel economy,
reduced emissions, stable idling and no choke to fuss with during start up.
The closed loop design means the system is constantly monitoring the fuel
/ air mixture and adjusting it as required for maximum performance plus reduced
emissions.


Denso 12-hole injectors are used for excellent fuel atomization for maximum
power and response across the entire rev range.


The VMAX utilizes a lightweight main Electronic Control Unit (ECU) that in
fact comprises 3 ECUs in total. The main 32-bit ECU controls the ignition
and fuel injection process, while a 2nd and 3rd integral ECU controls the
YCC-T & YCC-I. This "combined" ECU design reduces weight.


YCC-I or Yamaha's Chip Controlled Intake means the intake funnels / stacks
vary in length (between 2 positions) depending on engine rpm. An electronic
servo motor varies the funnel length from 150mm (for low to mid rpms) to the
short setting of 54mm for high rpm. The transition or switching rpm between
the 2 lengths is 6,650 rpms. The revolutionary YCC-I provides the best of
both worlds, solid low rpm torque and power combined with an amazing high
rpm rush. It takes only 0.3 of a second for the funnels to move from the tall
to the short position.


Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) electronically controls the throttle
valves for outstanding response and improved controllability at all rpms.
This system features twin Throttle Position Sensors (TPS) and a D.C. motor
driving the throttle valves. The YCC-T is used to provide even more control
of the intake air volume for smoother torque character. The rider can "mechanically
close" the throttles by simply closing the throttle twist grip.


Large capacity airbox uses a viscous-type paper air filter.


Air Induction System (AIS) injects fresh air into the exhaust port area to
fully combust any un-burnt fuel, reducing harmful HC and CO emissions for
a cleaner environment.


4-into-1-into-2 into-4 exhaust system is used. Not only does it make a serious
styling statement but also provides excellent performance and reduced emissions
thanks to a 3-way honeycomb catalytic converter in the under engine "muffler
box". It also features Yamaha's patented Exhaust Ultimate Power Valve
(EXUP). This system monitors engine rpm and adjusts exhaust flow (via the
EXUP valve) for maximum performance at all rpms with no "flat spots".
This system helps to improve torque, optimize fuel economy and reduce emissions
too.


New crankcase design incorporates the cylinders into the upper half of the
cases for reduced weight. Ceramic composite cylinder "bores" are
a "liner-less" design with the ceramic coating sprayed directly
on the aluminium block to ensure great heat dissipation for consistent power
delivery, reduced friction and reduced weight.


Open deck type cylinder sleeves are used for maximum cooling efficiency.


Lightweight magnesium alloy crankcase covers are used.


Hydraulically activated, ramp-type slipper clutch featuring 10 friction plates
is used to deliver consistent clutch performance with a light lever pull and
minimal maintenance. A slipper or back limiter clutch assembly reduces rear
wheel hop when making hard downshifts or under hard braking. The clutch master
cylinder is a Nissin design using a 14mm piston. The clutch lever offers 4
positions of adjustability.


5-speed transmission features optimized gear ratios for maximum acceleration
and performance. 5th gear is an overdrive gear to reduce engine rpm at highway
speeds for a comfortable ride.


Clean, quiet, smooth low-maintenance shaft drive is used. This system features
dual "U" joints to accommodate the extra wide rear tire.


Compact rear shaft drive gearcase assembly reduces weight and improves styling.


Functional hand finished aluminium intake covers highlight Yamaha's quality
and attention to detail.


ACM magneto produces 420 watts of power at 5,000 rpms.


High-performance direct ignition coils (ignition coil is built into the spark
plug cap) reduce weight while iridium spark plugs and high-output magneto
deliver increased spark energy.



 


Chassis/Suspension


Lightweight cast aluminium frame has been designed to offer an optimized
rigidity balance to maximize handling performance. This frame is very rigid
or stiff at the head pipe, engine mounts and swingarm pivot point. In other
areas, material is less rigid in order to allow for "tuned flex".


Extra-long, lightweight cast aluminium swingarm provides great torsional
rigidity for excellent handling and manoeuverability. The distance between
the swingarm pivot and the rear axle has been optimized (662.5mm) for great
rear wheel traction. Threaded holes for racing type stand are provided.


Detachable C.F. die cast aluminium and extruded aluminium rear sub frame
means easier maintenance access (and a less costly repair if the unit is "looped
out").


Huge fully adjustable, conventional cartridge-type 52mm front fork features
120mm (4.7") of road-smoothing wheel travel. The inner types feature
a oxide titanium coating to reduce friction and wear. The adjustable design
allows the rider to tailor suspension settings to match rider's weight and
road conditions to maximize handling and suspension performance. There is
6-way spring preload adjustability plus 20-way compression damping and 25-way
rebound damping adjustability.


Lightweight triple clamps. The upper is made of cast aluminium while the
lower clamp is forged aluminium. Fork pitch is 225mm while offset is 30mm.


Link Monocross rear suspension utilizes a fully adjustable remote reservoir
rear shock. Rear wheel travel is 110mm (4.3"). Adjustments include 11
clicks / steps of spring preload adjustability (via easy-access remote adjuster),
12-way compression damping and 20-way rebound damping adjustability.


15-litre fluorinated polyethylene fuel tank is mounted below the rider's
seat and therefore helps maintain a low centre of gravity plus mass centralization.
It also provides space for the large capacity airbox. The fluorination treatment
reduces the "permeation" of fuel vapours (hydrocarbons) into the
atmosphere. The electric fuel pump is housed inside the tank. The low fuel
warning light will illuminate with approx. 4.2 litres of fuel remaining.


Dual floating 320mm wave-style front rotors are squeezed by radial mount,
monoblock 6-piston calipers. The result is incredible braking performance
with excellent control and lever feedback. The master cylinder is a Brembo
radial pump master cylinder with a 16mm piston, a direct GP race innovation.
The lever is adjustable for various hand sizes.


298mm wave-style rear disc is squeezed by a single-piston slide-type caliper
utilizing sintered metal pads and a 14mm Brembo master. The caliper is mounted
below the swingram to maintain a handling enhancing low centre of gravity.


Anti-lock braking system features Yamaha's latest ABS system, very similar
to that found on the '08 FJR1300. The linear controlled 3-position ABS system
features an ECU with an integrated compact hydraulic unit built into the ECU
plus active type wheel sensors with magnetic rotors. The benefit is reduced
weight, excellent mass centralization and better lever feedback feeling when
the system is operating. The main benefit of ABS is excellent control under
hard braking or braking on wet or slippery surfaces since the ABS system helps
to prevents wheel lock-up.


Rugged yet lightweight cast aluminium 5-spoke mag wheels front and rear.
The wheels utilize hollow "spokes" to reduce unsprung weight for
superior handling. Front rim size is a 3.50 x 18 fitted with a tubeless 120/70R18
radial tire, while the rear is 6.00 x 18 fitted with a wide tubeless 200/50R18
radial tire.


Conventional tapered 1?" diameter low rise steel handlebar.


Cool multi-function handlebar mounted meter includes analog tachometer and
digital speedo plus an adjustable shift light and a variety of warning lights.
A second multi-function display panel is located on top of the "fuel
tank" (actually it is the airbox cover). Readouts on this panel include
fuel gauge, fuel consumption display, odometer, dual tripmeters, clock, coolant
temp, gear indicator, throttle valve opening, intake air temp, stop watch
and fuel reserve tripmeter. This panel uses a highly visible 256 x 64 dot

Immobilizer ignition system is designed to reduce the possibility of "ride-away"
theft. This system must recognize the "coded ignition key" in order
for the unit to start. If the immobilizer ignition does not recognize the
key (or a screwdriver or other type of "jimmy tool") the bike will
not start even if the ignition is turned or forced into the on position. If
the system does not recognize the coded chip in the ignition key, it will
not allow the ignition system, fuel pump or starter motor to function.
